1. A hand-held, controlling device, comprising:
- a housing having a touch sensitive surface, the touch sensitive surface having defined thereon a plurality of touch zones each of which is activable to cause the hand-held, controlling device to transmit commands for controlling an operational function of one or more external devices;
a processing device having associated programming that uses a relative distance from an origin location to each of the plurality of touch zones of the touch sensitive surface activated by a user to select a one of the plurality of touch zones as being intended for activation by the user; and
an accelerometer in communication with the processing device;
wherein the accelerometer generates a signal indicative of an operating orientation for the hand-held, controlling device and wherein the processing device uses the signal generated by the accelerometer to automatically establish the origin location.

-
a housing having a touch sensitive surface, the touch sensitive surface having defined thereon a plurality of touch zones each of which is activable to cause the hand-held, controlling device to transmit commands for controlling an operational function of one or more external devices; a processing device having associated programming that uses a priority provided to each of the plurality of touch zones of the touch sensitive surface activated by a user to select a one of the plurality of touch zones as being intended for activation by the user wherein the priorities are established considering an origin location of a user'"'"'s reach across the touch sensitive surface; and an accelerometer in communication with the processing device; wherein the accelerometer generates a signal indicative of an operating orientation for the hand-held, controlling device and wherein the processing device uses the signal generated by the accelerometer to automatically establish the origin location. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6)
