Abstract

Systems and methods are implemented for evaluating underground structures and objects, particularly relatively shallow underground structures and objects, using a seismic or acoustic source signal and a resulting seismic or acoustic wave. A discrete or unitary apparatus incorporates both a seismic source transducer and a receiver transducer within a common housing or frame. A unitary seismic probe includes a ground engaging member and a seismic source mechanically coupled to the ground engaging member. The probe further includes a sensor assembly mechanically coupled to the ground engaging member and configured to sense ground vibrations resulting from an impact to the ground engaging member by the seismic source.

Claims

1. A seismic sensor array, comprising;

a frame comprising a plurality of support arrangements each configured to support one of a plurality of discrete seismic probes, the support arrangements configured to maintain the seismic probes in substantially fixed relative locations while allowing the seismic probes to individually contact and engage the ground; and

each of the seismic probes comprising;

a ground engagement member;

a seismic source mechanically coupled to the ground engagement member, the seismic source configured to transmit energy through the ground engagement member; and

a sensor assembly attached to the ground engagement member and configured to sense ground vibrations resulting from an impact to the ground generated by the seismic source acting on the ground engagement member and of a type and wavelength that facilitate shallow seismic surveying of underground objects.

2. The array of claim 1, wherein the ground engagement member, the seismic source, and the sensor assembly of each of the seismic probes has a longitudinal axis and arranged in a housing such that the respective longitudinal axes are aligned in a substantially parallel relationship.

3. The array of claim 1, wherein the support arrangements are configured to allow each of the seismic probes to individually contact and engage the ground with a consistent force.

4. The array of claim 1, wherein:

the frame supports a cross member; and

each of the support arrangements comprises a pivoting mounting assembly for each seismic probe to facilitate each of the seismic probes to individually contact and engage the ground with a consistent force.

5. The array of claim 1, wherein the sensor assembly comprises an accelerometer, a velocity sensor, or a geophone.

6. The array of claim 1, wherein the sensor assembly further comprises:

a generally cylindrical body;

a first end coupled to the ground engagement member; and

a second end comprising;

a generally flat surface for supporting an anvil; and

an aperture for supporting a sensor configured to sense ground vibrations resulting from the impact to the ground engagement member by the seismic source.

7. The array of claim 1, wherein the seismic source is configured to generate an impact force of no greater than about 500 lbs. peak.

8. The array of claim 1, wherein the seismic source is configured to generate a probe wave that provides a response bandwidth to about 3 kHz for depths up to about 15 feet.

9. The array of claim 1, wherein the seismic source comprises a solenoid coupled to a capacitor.

10. The array of claim 1, wherein the seismic source comprises an anvil configured to be struck by a source of energy and transmit energy resulting from an anvil strike through the ground engagement member.

11. The array of claim 10, wherein the energy source comprises an activator configured to strike the anvil to generate a seismic wave or an acoustic wave.

12. The array of claim 10, wherein the energy source comprises a spring biased plunger, positioned away from the anvil in a first state, and configured to cooperate with a solenoid configured to propel the plunger towards the anvil when energized.

13. The array of claim 1, wherein the ground engagement member comprises a wedge or a substantially flat portion arranged to contact the ground.

14. The array of claim 1, wherein the frame comprises ground supports configured to support the array as it is pulled across the ground.

22. The array of claim 1, wherein the seismic source and the sensor assembly are arranged along a longitudinal axis of the ground engagement member.

15. A method of probing the ground, comprising:

providing a frame comprising a plurality of support arrangements each configured to support one of a plurality of discrete seismic probes, each of the seismic probes comprising;

a ground engagement member;

a seismic source mechanically coupled to the ground engagement member; and

a sensor assembly attached to the ground engagement member;

contacting the ground with the ground engagement members;

maintaining, using the support arrangements, the seismic probes in substantially fixed relative locations while allowing the seismic probes to individually engage the ground with a consistent force;

generating seismic or acoustic probe waves that facilitate shallow seismic surveying of underground objects using the seismic sources;

transmitting the probe waves through the respective ground engagement members and into the ground to perform the shallow seismic surveying; and

sensing for the underground objects based on a response to the probe waves.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein generating each of the probe waves comprises generating an impact force of no greater than about 500 lbs. peak by each seismic source.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the generated probe waves provide a response bandwidth to about 3 kHz for depths up to about 15 feet.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising self-seating the ground engagement members using the probe wave transmitted to the respective ground engagement members.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein probe waves are transmitted into the ground using each of the ground engagement members, one at a time, while sensing ground vibrations using some or all of the other ground engagement members.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising scanning a region of ground by repeating the contacting, maintaining, generating, transmitting, and sensing processes at each of a plurality of ground locations.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

storing ground vibration sensing data;

recording position data while scanning; and

combining the ground vibration sensing data with the position data to develop a map of the scanned region.

23. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

transmitting first probe waves into the ground using a first seismic probe;

sensing a response to the first probe waves using a second seismic probe;

transmitting second probe waves into the ground using the second seismic probe; and

sensing a response to the second probe waves using the first seismic probe.
