Abstract

A method and apparatus for providing intermittent or interruptible power to an electronic device. The circuit may provide power upon user initiation and interrupt that power in response to a user command, fault state, period of inactivity and so forth. As one example, interruptible power may be initially provided to activate or “power up” an electronic device and constant power provided after the initial activation. The initial powering up of the device may be facilitated by closing two contacts. The circuit may continue to provide power after the button is released through a monitoring and/or feedback mechanism.

Claims

1. A method for supplying power to a device, comprising the operations of:

detecting a button has been pressed;

detecting an output voltage from a power converter;

detecting the button has been released;

in response to detecting the button has been released and detecting the output voltage, supplying a base voltage to a base of a transistor, thereby creating a current path through the transistor and maintaining the output voltage of the power converter;

detecting a fault condition; and

in response to detecting the fault condition, ceasing to supply the base voltage, thereby terminating the output voltage of the power converter.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the fault condition is a lack of user input to the device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting that the button has been pressed comprises:

detecting a first predetermined voltage on a common node in the device.

4. A method for supplying power to a device, comprising the operations of:

detecting a button has been pressed by;

while the button is pressed, supplying a voltage to a central node from a battery, the supplied voltage at or above a first predetermined voltage; and

receiving a signal from a common node at a detection circuit that detects the first predetermined voltage on the common node

detecting an output voltage from a power converter;

detecting the button has been released; and

in response to detecting the button has been released and detecting the output voltage, supplying a base voltage to a base of a transistor, thereby creating a current path through the transistor and maintaining the output voltage of the power converter.

8. The method of claim 4, wherein supplying the base voltage to the base of the transistor, thereby creating the current path through the transistor and maintaining the output voltage of the power converter comprises:

entering a watchdog mode in which the base voltage is periodically supplied to the base of the transistor.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein, in the watchdog mode, a time interval for periodically supplying the base voltage is configured with a length such that the voltage of the central node remains above a shutdown input voltage of the power converter.

5. A method for supplying power to a device, comprising the operations of:

detecting a button has been pressed by detecting a first predetermined voltage on a common node in the device;

detecting an output voltage from a power converter;

detecting the button has been released by;

detecting that the voltage on the common node is zero; and

detecting a second predetermined voltage on a central node in the device; and

in response to detecting the button has been released and detecting the output voltage, supplying a base voltage to a base of a transistor, thereby creating a current path through the transistor and maintaining the output voltage of the power converter.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein detecting that the voltage on the common node is zero comprises:

when the button is released, disconnecting the battery from the common node;

draining common node through a diode coupled to a capacitor, the capacitor coupled between the diode and a ground; and

receiving a signal from the common node at the detection circuit that detects that the voltage is zero on the common node.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein detecting the second predetermined voltage on the central node in the device comprises:

sustaining the voltage of the central node at or above the second predetermined voltage for a predetermined time using a capacitor coupled to the central node; and

receiving a signal from the central node at the detection circuit that detects that the second predetermined voltage on the central node.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

a wireless keyboard;

a button on the wireless keyboard;

a power converter in the wireless keyboard that provides power for the wireless keyboard;

a transistor in the wireless keyboard coupled to the power converter;

a controller in the wireless keyboard that is coupled to the button and the power converter, wherein the controller is configured to;

detect that the button has been pressed;

detect an output voltage from a power converter;

detect that the button has been released; and

upon detecting that the button has been released and detecting the output voltage, supplying a base voltage to a base of the transistor, thereby creating a current path through the transistor and maintaining the output voltage of the power converter so that the wireless keyboard enters a powered-up state.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein, when the keyboard is in the powered-up state, the controller is configured to:

detect that the button has been pressed and released; and

ceasing supplying the base voltage to the base of the transistor, thereby lowering the output voltage of the power converter so that the wireless keyboard can enter a powered-down state.
