1. A method for an Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader for writing an Electronic Product Code (EPC) into an RFID tag, the method comprising:

  • singulating a first one of tags in a group,determining that the first one of the tags is not encoded with a final EPC, reading a base code tag from the first one of the tag,deriving the final EPC from the base code,determining that the first one of the tags is encoded with an initial EPC and overwriting the initial EPC with the final EPC to a memory of the first one of the tags,singulating successively each of the other tags in the group while the group of tags is in a reading zone, andsetting an error flag if a number of the singulated tags disagrees with a preset group number or if an error is detected.
