Abstract

A method for configuring stimulation pulses in an implantable stimulator device having a plurality of electrodes is disclosed, which method is particularly useful in adjusting the electrodes by current steering during initialization of the device. In one aspect, a set of ideal pulses for patient therapy is determined, in which at least two of the ideal pulses are of the same polarity and are intended to be simultaneous applied to corresponding electrodes on the implantable stimulator device during an initial duration. These pulses are reconstructed into fractionalized pulses, each comprised of pulse portions. The fractionalized pulses are applied to the corresponding electrodes on the device during a final duration, but the pulse portions of the fractionalized pulses are not simultaneously applied during the final duration.

Claims

1. A method for configuring a stimulation pulse in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a first pulse to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulse into a fractionalized pulse, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for a second duration and not asserted between the second durations; and

applying the fractionalized pulse to the electrode.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, and the second duration is less than the first duration.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the second duration is less than the time period at which nerves can respond to electrical stimulation.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is approximately equal to the third duration.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, and a sum of the second durations of the plurality of second pulses is approximately equal to the first duration.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, and a sum of the second durations of the plurality of second pulses is different from the first duration.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse comprises a first amount of charge, the fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are same.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the fractionalized pulse is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the first pulse.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the duty cycle is established by controlling a current source in the ISD.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the duty cycle is approximately 50%.

14. A method for configuring stimulation pulses in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a sequence of first pulses to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy, the first pulses in the sequence occurring at a first frequency;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulses into fractionalized pulses to form a sequence of fractionalized pulses, wherein each fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses, the plurality of second pulses occurring at a second frequency, wherein the second frequency is greater than the first frequency; and

applying the sequence of fractionalized pulses to the electrode.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein fractionalized pulses in the sequence of fractionalized pulses are applied at the first frequency.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and the second duration is less than the first duration.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the second duration is less than the time period at which nerves can respond to electrical stimulation.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses has a first duration, each fractionalized pulse in the sequence of fractionalized pulses has a third duration, and the first duration is approximately equal to the third duration.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses has a first duration, each fractionalized pulse in the sequence of fractionalized pulses has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses comprises a first amount of charge, each fractionalized pulse in the sequence of fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses has a first amplitude, each fractionalized pulse in the sequence of fractionalized pulses has a second amplitude, and the first amplitude and the second amplitude are same.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein each first pulse in the sequence of pulses has a first amplitude, each fractionalized pulse in the sequence of fractionalized pulses has a second amplitude, and the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein the sequence of fractionalized pulses is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the sequence of first pulses.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein each fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for a second duration and not asserted between the second durations.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the duty cycle is approximately 50%.

26. A method for configuring a stimulation pulse in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a first pulse to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulse into a fractionalized pulse, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses; and

applying the fractionalized pulse to the electrode,

wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration less than the first duration, and wherein the second duration is less than the time period at which nerves can respond to electrical stimulation.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is approximately equal to the third duration.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is approximately equal to the first duration.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is different from the first duration.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein the first pulse comprises a first amount of charge, the fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

32. The method of claim 26, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are same.

33. The method of claim 26, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

34. The method of claim 26, wherein the fractionalized pulse is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the first pulse.

35. The method of claim 26, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for the second duration and not asserted between the second durations.

36. A method for configuring a stimulation pulse in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a first pulse to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulse into a fractionalized pulse, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses; and

applying the fractionalized pulse to the electrode,

wherein the first pulse has a first duration, the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is approximately equal to the first duration.

38. The method of claim 36, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is different from the first duration.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein the first pulse comprises a first amount of charge, the fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are same.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein the fractionalized pulse is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the first pulse.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for a second duration and not asserted between the second durations.

44. A method for configuring a stimulation pulse in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a first pulse to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulse into a fractionalized pulse, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses; and

applying the fractionalized pulse to the electrode,

wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is different from the first duration.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is approximately equal to the third duration.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the first pulse comprises a first amount of charge, the fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

48. The method of claim 44, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are same.

49. The method of claim 44, wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

50. The method of claim 44, wherein the fractionalized pulse is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the first pulse.

51. The method of claim 44, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for the second duration and not asserted between the second durations.

52. A method for configuring a stimulation pulse in an implantable stimulator device (ISD), comprising:

determining in the ISD a first pulse to be applied to an electrode for patient therapy;

reconstructing in the ISD the first pulse into a fractionalized pulse, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a plurality of second pulses; and

applying the fractionalized pulse to the electrode,

wherein the first pulse has a first amplitude, the fractionalized pulse has a second amplitude, and wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are different.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is approximately equal to the third duration.

54. The method of claim 52, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, the fractionalized pulse has a third duration, and the first duration is not equal to the third duration.

55. The method of claim 52, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is approximately equal to the first duration.

56. The method of claim 52, wherein the first pulse has a first duration, each second pulse has a second duration, and a sum of second durations of the plurality of second pulses is different from the first duration.

57. The method of claim 52, wherein the first pulse comprises a first amount of charge, the fractionalized pulse comprises a second amount of charge, and the first amount is approximately equal to the second amount.

58. The method of claim 52, wherein the fractionalized pulse is defined in a timing channel in the ISD, and wherein the timing channel is the same as a timing channel determined for the first pulse.

59. The method of claim 52, wherein the fractionalized pulse comprises a duty cycle in which each second pulse is asserted for a second duration and not asserted between the second durations.
