Abstract

A nanostructured particulate material, which includes a redox active luminescent organic and/or ionic compound, is provided herein. The nanostructured particulate material may be used for determining the presence of an analyte of interest in a sample by detecting the emitted electromagnetic radiation generated by exposing a reagent mixture, which includes the nanostructured material and the target analyte, to chemical or electrochemical energy.

Claims

1. Luminescent nanobelts comprising a luminescent polydendate metal complex, which includes one or more polydentate ligands having at least one long chain hydrocarbon group;

wherein the luminescent nanobelts have a least one dimension which is no larger than about 250 nm.

2. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the luminescent polydendate metal complex comprises a heteroaromatic polydendate metal complex, which includes at least one long chain alkyl substituted bipyridyl ligand.

3. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the luminescent polydendate metal complex comprises a long chain alkyl substituted Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ complex.

4. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the luminescent polydendate metal complex comprises a ruthenium, osmium, rhenium, iridium, platinum, cerium, europium, terbium, and/or ytterbium ion.

5. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the luminescent polydendate metal complex is a luminescent, heteroaromatic polydendate ruthenium complex.

6. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 5, wherein the luminescent nanobelts are formed from a luminescent, heteroaromatic polydendate ruthenium complex, which includes at least one long chain alkyl substituted bipyridine ligand.

7. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 6, wherein the luminescent polydendate ruthenium complex comprises Ru(bpy)₂(4,4′

-(C(O)O(CH₂)_nCH₃)₂-bpy)²⁺, where n is an integer from 10 to 30.

8. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 3, wherein the luminescent nanobelts have a long, straight, belt-like morphology with a thickness of about 50 to 120 nm and a width-to-thickness ratio of about 5 to 10.

9. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the luminescent polydendate metal complex can be induced to repeatedly emit electromagnetic radiation by direct exposure to an electrochemical energy source.

10. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the nanobelts have a long, straight, belt-like morphology with a thickness of about 50 to 120 nm.

11. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 10, wherein the nanobelts have a width-to-thickness ratio of about 5 to 10.

12. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 1, wherein the long chain hydrocarbon group is a linear long chain alky group having from 12 to 22 carbon atoms.

13. Luminescent nanobelts comprising a luminescent polydendant ruthenium complex, which includes at least one long chain alky substituted bipyridine ligand;

wherein the luminescent nanobelts have a least one dimension which is no larger than about 250 nm.

14. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 13, wherein the nanobelts have a long, straight, belt-like morphology with a width of about 200 to 1000 nm, a length of about 5 to 15 μ

m, and a thickness of about 50 to 120 nm.

15. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 13, wherein the nanobelts comprise Ru(bpy)₂(4,4′

-(C(O)O(CH₂)₁₄CH₃)₂-bpy))²⁺.

16. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 15, wherein the nanobelts as a dispersion in water have an absorption band with a maximum at 458 nm.

17. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 15, wherein the nanobelts as a dispersion in water have a fluorescence emission with a maximum at about 640 nm.

18. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 15,wherein the nanobelts have an XRD spectrum which includes a main peak at 2.231°

.

19. The luminescent nanobelts of claim 15, wherein the nanobelts have a long, straight, belt-like morphology with a width of about 200 to 1000 nm, a length of about 5to 15 μ

m, and a thickness of about 50 120 nm.
