Abstract

Method and apparatus for dynamically optimizing the transmission level of each remote terminal in a satellite-based communication network. Each remote terminal maintains quasi-error-free communication at the highest efficiency level available under changing link conditions and network configurations, without requiring the reservation of substantial power margins, which results in a much more efficient satellite network.

Claims

1. A terminal device in a satellite-based communication system, comprising at least one processor and memory, wherein the terminal device is configured to:

transmit a plurality of maintenance packets to a hub in the satellite-based communication system, at a first transmit power level;

receive one or more reply packets containing reception level measurements for one or more of the maintenance packets transmitted at the first transmit power level;

calculate an average reception level for the maintenance packets transmitted at the first transmit power level;

determine a satellite transmitter input power level; and

calculate a gain equivalent value based on the average reception level at the first transmit power level and the determined satellite transmitter input power level.

2. The terminal device of claim 1, wherein the terminal device is further configured to:

transmit a second plurality of maintenance packets to the hub at a second transmit power level;

receive one or more reply packets containing reception level measurements for one or more of the maintenance packets transmitted at the second transmit power level;

calculate a second average reception level for the maintenance packets transmitted at the second transmit power level;

calculate a second gain equivalent value based on the second average reception and the determined satellite transmitter input power level;

determine whether a difference between the first gain equivalent value and the second gain equivalent value exceeds a predetermined gain difference threshold; and

calculate and store a maximal transmit power level based on any of the first transmit power level and the second transmit power level if the difference between the first gain equivalent value and the second gain equivalent value exceeds the predefined gain difference threshold.

3. The terminal device of claim 2, wherein the predetermined gain difference threshold is 1 dB and the second transmit power level corresponds to an approximate 1 dB compression point.

4. A satellite-based communication system comprising:

a hub configured to communicate via satellite with one or more remote terminals; and

one or more remote terminals, each of said remote terminals is configured to;

determine a maximal transmit power level for transmitting data to the hub;

transmit one or more maintenance packets to the hub at a first transmit power level, wherein each said maintenance packet includes an information item containing a difference between the first transmit power level and the maximal transmit power for transmitting data to the hub.

5. The satellite-based communication system of claim 4, wherein each of said remote terminals is further configured to:

receive one or more reply packets corresponding to the one or more maintenance packets, each said reply packet containing a measured reception level of its corresponding maintenance packet by the hub; and

adjust a transmit power level for transmitting data to the hub based on the received measured reception levels in the reply packets.

6. The satellite-based communication system of claim 5, wherein adjusting the transmit power level for transmitting data to the hub comprises:

determining a decline in the measured reception level of the maintenance packets by the hub over a period of time; and

configuring the remote terminal to increase its transmit power level based on the determined decline.

7. The satellite-based communication system of claim 4, wherein each of said remote terminals is further configured to:

determine a maximal transmit power level for the remote terminal, wherein the maximal transmit power level is determined based on at least one of;

capabilities of an indoor unit of the remote terminal;

or

a maximal output power at a maximal transmit power point of a satellite transmitter of the remote terminal.

8. The satellite-based communication system of claim 4, wherein the hub is further configured to:

receive maintenance packets transmitted from the one or more remote terminals;

use the information item in the received maintenance packets to determine one or more transmission timeslots for the one or more remote terminals; and

assign the determined transmission timeslots to the one or more remote terminals.

9. A satellite-based communication system, comprising:

one or more remote terminals and a hub,

each of said remote terminals being configured to;

transmit maintenance packets via satellite to the hub, and

the hub being configured to;

receive the maintenance packets transmitted by the one or more remote terminals;

measure the reception level of the maintenance packets received from the one or more remote terminals;

identify a plurality of different timeslot types in a return link of the satellite-based communication network, wherein each of the one or more remote terminals is associated with one or more of the different timeslot types; and

based on the measured reception levels of the maintenance packets, configure communications with the one or more remote terminals such that each remote terminal is allocated to a timeslot type.

10. The satellite-based communication system of claim 9, wherein each of the different timeslot types corresponds to a different combination of a symbol rate and a modulation and coding combination.

11. The satellite-based communication system of claim 9, wherein measuring the reception level of a first maintenance packet transmitted by a first remote terminal comprises:

retrieving an information item from the first maintenance packet, the information item corresponding to a delta value between the transmit power of the first maintenance packet and a maximal transmit power of the first remote terminal; and

using the delta value, calculating a first maximal reception level for data received by the hub from the first remote terminal.

12. The satellite-based communication system of claim 11, wherein configuring communications with the one or more remote terminals comprises:

determining an efficient timeslot type for the first remote terminal based on the first maximal reception level.

13. The satellite-based communication system of claim 12, wherein said configuring of communications with at least the first remote terminal further comprises:

determining a lack of timeslots of the efficient timeslot type for the first remote terminal; and

assigning one or more less efficient timeslot types to the first remote terminal, based on a determination that a nominal reception level for the one or more less efficient timeslot types is below the maximal reception level of the first remote terminal.

14. The satellite-based communication system of claim 9, wherein the hub is further configured to:

for a first maintenance packet received from a first remote terminal, transmit a reply packet to the first remote terminal containing the measured reception level of the first maintenance packet.
