Abstract

The present disclosure provides a sensor port configured to receive a plurality of analyte sensors having different sizes, shapes and/or electrode configurations. Also provided are analyte meters, analyte monitoring devices and/or systems and drug delivery devices and/or systems utilizing the disclosed sensor ports.

Claims

1. An analyte monitoring device comprising:

a sensor port comprising;

a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion; and

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having an opposing electrode contact configuration;

a second set of sensor port contacts positioned on the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a co-planar electrode contact configuration; and

a processor programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor, and

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor.

2. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the first analyte sensor is a glucose sensor and the second analyte sensor is a ketone sensor.

3. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, wherein both the first and second analyte sensors are glucose sensors.

4. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, further comprising a communication unit.

5. The analyte monitoring device of claim 4, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide two-way communication between the sensor port and a device and/or network external to the sensor port.

6. The analyte monitoring device of claim 4, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide two-way communication between the sensor port and a network external to the sensor port.

7. The analyte monitoring device of claim 6, wherein the network is a computer network.

8. The analyte monitoring device of claim 4, wherein the communication unit comprises a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector.

9. The analyte monitoring device of claim 4, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the sensor port and an external device and/or network.

10. The analyte monitoring device of claim 9, wherein the communication unit utilizes a wireless communication protocol selected from a radio frequency (RF) protocol and an infrared (IR) protocol.

11. The analyte monitoring device of claim 9, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the sensor port and an external device, the external device comprises a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, and the communication unit utilizes an RF wireless communication protocol to communicate with the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag.

12. The analyte monitoring device of claim 9, wherein the communication unit utilizes a wireless communication protocol selected from code division multiple access (CDMA) and Global System for Mobile communications (GSM).

13. The analyte monitoring device of claim 4, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the sensor port and an external device.

14. The analyte monitoring device of claim 13, wherein the external device is a medication delivery device or an implanted or partially implanted analyte sensor.

15. The analyte monitoring device of claim 13, wherein the external device is an insulin pump.

16. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the sensor port is configured to receive analyte sensors having different widths.

17. The analyte monitoring device of claim 16, wherein the sensor port comprises a side wall and a biasing mechanism configured to position the analyte sensors against the sidewall during insertion of the analyte sensors.

18. The analyte monitoring device of claim 16, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is greater than that of the second analyte sensor.

19. The analyte monitoring device of claim 16, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is less than that of the second analyte sensor.

20. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the sensor port comprises an analyte sensor ejector slidably engaged therewith.

21. The analyte monitoring device of claim 1, wherein the sensor port comprises at least four sensor port contacts configured to contact the first analyte sensor upon insertion of the first analyte sensor into the sensor port, and at least three sensor port contacts configured to contact the second analyte sensor upon insertion of the second analyte sensor into the sensor port.

22. The analyte monitoring device of claim 21, wherein the sensor port comprises at least seven different sensor port contacts.

23. The analyte monitoring device of claim 22, wherein the sensor port comprises at least nine different sensor port contacts.

24. The analyte monitoring device of claim 21, wherein one of the at least four sensor port contacts is attached to the top portion of the sensor port and three of the at least four sensor port contacts are attached to the bottom portion of the sensor port.

25. The analyte monitoring device of claim 21, wherein the at least three sensor port contacts are attached to the top portion of the sensor port.

26. The analyte monitoring device of claim 21, wherein the sensor port comprises a protective protrusion extending from the top portion of the sensor port into the interior of the sensor port.

27. An analyte monitoring device comprising:

a sensor port comprising;

a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion;

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having a first width and an opposing electrode contact configuration; and

a second set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a second width and a co-planar electrode contact configuration; and

a side wall and a biasing mechanism that is configured to position the first and second analyte sensors against the sidewall during their insertion into the sensor port; and

a processor programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor, and

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor.

28. The analyte monitoring device of claim 27, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is greater than that of the second analyte sensor.

29. The analyte monitoring device of claim 27, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is less than that of the second analyte sensor.

30. An analyte meter comprising:

an analyte meter housing;

a sensor port coupled to the analyte meter housing, wherein the sensor port comprises a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion,

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having an opposing electrode contact configuration;

a second set of sensor port contacts positioned on the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a co-planar electrode contact configuration;

and

a processing unit coupled to the analyte meter housing, wherein the processing unit is programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor,

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor; and

determine an analyte concentration in a sample contacted to the first or the second analyte sensor.

31. The analyte meter of claim 30, wherein the first analyte sensor is a glucose sensor and the second analyte sensor is a ketone sensor.

32. The analyte meter of claim 30, wherein both the first and second analyte sensors are glucose sensors.

33. The analyte meter of claim 30, further comprising a communication unit.

34. The analyte meter of claim 33, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide two-way communication between the analyte meter and a device and/or network external to the analyte meter.

35. The analyte meter of claim 33, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide two-way communication between the analyte meter and a network external to the analyte meter.

36. The analyte meter of claim 35, wherein the network is a computer network.

37. The analyte meter of claim 33, wherein the communication unit comprises a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector.

38. The analyte meter of claim 33, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the analyte meter and an external device and/or network.

39. The analyte meter of claim 38, wherein the communication unit utilizes a wireless communication protocol selected from a radio frequency (RF) protocol and an infrared (IR) protocol.

40. The analyte meter of claim 38, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the analyte meter and an external device, the external device comprises a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, and the communication unit utilizes an RF wireless communication protocol to communicate with the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag.

41. The analyte meter of claim 38, wherein the communication unit utilizes a wireless communication protocol selected from code division multiple access (CDMA) and Global System for Mobile communications (GSM).

42. The analyte meter of claim 33, wherein the communication unit is configured to provide wireless communication between the analyte meter and an external device.

43. The analyte meter of claim 42, wherein the external device is a medication delivery device or an implanted or partially implanted analyte sensor.

44. The analyte meter of claim 42, wherein the external device is an insulin pump.

45. The analyte meter of claim 30, further comprising a display unit in communication with the processing unit.

46. The analyte meter of claim 45, wherein the display unit comprises a touch screen.

47. The analyte meter of claim 45, wherein the display unit comprises a liquid crystal display (LCD).

48. The analyte meter of claim 30, wherein the sensor port is configured to receive analyte sensors having different widths.

49. The analyte meter of claim 48, wherein the sensor port comprises a side wall and a biasing mechanism configured to position the analyte sensors against the sidewall during insertion of the analyte sensors.

50. The analyte meter of claim 48, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is greater than that of the second analyte sensor.

51. The analyte meter of claim 48, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is less than that of the second analyte sensor.

52. The analyte meter of claim 30, wherein the sensor port comprises an analyte sensor ejector slidably engaged therewith.

53. The analyte meter of claim 30, wherein the sensor port comprises at least four sensor port contacts configured to contact the first analyte sensor upon insertion of the first analyte sensor into the sensor port, and at least three sensor port contacts configured to contact the second analyte sensor upon insertion of the second analyte sensor into the sensor port.

54. The analyte meter of claim 53, wherein the sensor port comprises at least seven different sensor port contacts.

55. The analyte meter of claim 54, wherein the sensor port comprises at least nine different sensor port contacts.

56. The analyte meter of claim 55, wherein one of the at least four sensor port contacts is attached to the top portion of the sensor port and three of the at least four sensor port contacts are attached to the bottom portion of the sensor port.

57. The analyte meter of claim 55, wherein the at least three sensor port contacts are attached to the top portion of the sensor port.

58. The analyte meter of claim 55, wherein the sensor port comprises a protective protrusion extending from the top portion of the sensor port into the interior of the sensor port.

59. An analyte meter comprising:

an analyte meter housing;

a sensor port coupled to the analyte meter housing, wherein the sensor port comprises a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion;

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having a first width and an opposing electrode contact configuration;

and a second set of sensor port contacts positioned on the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a second width and a co-planar electrode contact configuration;

wherein the sensor port comprises a side wall and a biasing mechanism that is configured to position the first and second analyte sensors against the sidewall during their insertion into the sensor port; and

a processing unit coupled to the analyte meter housing, wherein the processing unit is programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor,

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor; and

determine an analyte concentration in a sample contacted to the first or the second analyte sensor.

60. The analyte meter of claim 59, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is greater than that of the second analyte sensor.

61. The analyte meter of claim 59, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is less than that of the second analyte sensor.

62. A medical device comprising:

a medical device housing; and

a sensor port coupled to the medical device housing, wherein the sensor port comprises a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion;

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having an opposing electrode contact configuration;

a second set of sensor port contacts positioned on the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a co-planar electrode contact configuration;

a processor programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor,

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor; and

determine an analyte concentration in a sample contacted to the first or the second analyte sensor; and

a display for displaying the analyte concentration.

63. The medical device of claim 62, wherein the medical device is a medication delivery device.

64. The medical device of claim 63, wherein the medication delivery device is an insulin pump.

65. The medical device of claim 62, wherein the medical device is an analyte meter.

66. A medical device comprising:

a medical device housing; and

a sensor port coupled to the medical device housing, wherein the sensor port comprises

a sensor port housing comprising a top portion and a bottom portion;

a first set of sensor port contacts positioned in the sensor port housing along the top portion and the bottom portion and configured to contact a first analyte sensor having a first width and an opposing electrode contact configuration;

a second set of sensor port contacts positioned on the top portion or the bottom portion and configured to contact a second analyte sensor having a second width that is different from the first width and a co-planar electrode contact configuration; and

a side wall and a biasing mechanism that is configured to position the first and second analyte sensors against the sidewall during their insertion into the sensor port; and

a processor programmed to;

receive a signal from the first set of sensor port contacts on both the top portion and the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the first analyte sensor,

receive a signal from the second set of sensor port contacts on either the top portion or the bottom portion of the sensor port housing in response to insertion of the second analyte sensor, and

determine an analyte concentration in a sample contacted to the first or the second analyte sensor; and

a display for displaying the analyte concentration.

67. The medical device of claim 66, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is greater than that of the second analyte sensor.

68. The medical device of claim 66, wherein the first analyte sensor has a width which is less than that of the second analyte sensor.
