First Claim
1. A lighting unit for a distributed energy storage solution, the lighting unit comprising:
- a housing;
a battery associated with the housing and configured to be charged from an external power supply, wherein the external power supply has access to an electrical grid connection;
a light source associated with the housing and configured to emit light when powered by an amount of power from the external power supply and the battery; and
a timing facility associated with the housing, the lighting unit, and a controller, the timing facility being configured to provide information to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to;
select, based on the information received from the timing facility, a first portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the external power supply;
select, based on the information received from the timing facility, a second portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the battery; and
supply the amount of power to the light source by supplying the first portion of the amount of power from the external power supply and the second portion of the amount of power from the battery to cause the light source to emit light at an intensity level based on at least one of the received information from the timing facility or a reduction in power demand from the external power supply during a period of peak usage, and whereinthe timing facility stores times when selection of the first portion of the amount power and the second portion of the amount of power is disabled.

In embodiments of the present invention improved capabilities are described for autonomous shifting of at least a portion of a lighting load off an energy distribution grid, comprising electrically connecting a lighting device to the energy distribution grid; causing the lighting device to interpret information obtained from an information source proximate the lighting device; and causing the lighting device to select from at least two different power sources based on the interpretation, where selecting may include a sharing of the load between the two different power sources, and where one power source may be the energy distribution grid.

20. A method of shifting a lighting load off an electrical grid, comprising:

connecting a lighting unit to the electrical grid by an electrical grid connection; charging a battery from the electrical grid connection; powering a light source which emits light in response to receiving an amount of power from the electrical grid connection and the battery; receiving information from an information source proximate the lighting unit, wherein the information is indicative of a time of day; selecting, based on the received information, a first portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the electrical grid connection; selecting, based on the received information, a second portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the battery; and supplying the amount of power to the light source by supplying the first portion of the amount of power from the electrical grid connection and the second portion of the amount of power from the battery to cause the light source to emit light at an intensity level based on at least one of the received information from the information source or a reduction in power demand from the electrical grid connection during a period of peak usage, wherein the information source stores times when selection of the first portion of the amount power and the second portion of the amount of power is disabled. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33)
