1. A method of treating a mammal comprising the steps of:

  • a. introducing a catheter into a distensible tissue of a mammal, said catheter being operably connected to a drug delivery pump, andb. intermittently operating said drug delivery pump for one or more predetermined intervals of time to generate a pulsatile flux of drug through said catheter into said tissue,wherein said time intervals of intermittent pump operation allow sufficient time for said distensible tissue to recoil around said catheter, thereby preventing backflow of said drug along an outer wall of said catheter.
