A method for controlling a video recorder of a primary subsystem, the primary subsystem including a processor that detects operation of a first control by a user and of a second control by the user and that performs the method to accomplish pre-recording and event recording, the method comprising:
- if pre-recording;
in response to detecting operation of the first control;
discontinuing pre-recording; and
beginning event recording; and
in response to detecting operation of the second control, discontinuing pre-recording;
if event recording;
in response to detecting operation of the first control, recording an event marker;
in response to detecting prolonged operation of the first control for a period;
discontinuing event recording; and
beginning pre-recording;
in response to detecting operation of the second control, discontinuing event recording; and
if event recording is discontinued;
in response to detecting operation of the second control, continuing pre-recording; and
in response to detecting operation of the first control, beginning event recording.
