Vehicle window assembly
First Claim
1. A vehicle window assembly comprising:
- a vehicle structure including a body panel that at least partially defines a portion of a vehicle passenger compartment, the body panel defining a viewing aperture and having an exterior facing surface adjacent to the viewing aperture;
a window panel mounted to the body panel and covering the viewing aperture and a portion of the exterior facing surface, the window panel having a peripheral edge surrounding a first window surface and a second window surface opposite the first window surface, the first window surface including an etched section, the peripheral edge of the window panel and the exterior facing surface of the body panel defining a lighting enclosure adjacent to the viewing aperture;
a light source mounted directly to the exterior facing surface of the body panel within the lighting enclosure adjacent to a portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel such that light from the light source is directed to the portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel and such that the light travels in a lateral direction through the window panel selectively illuminating the etched section, the first window surface facing the passenger compartment and the second window surface at least partially defining an exterior surface of the vehicle; and
a trim element installed to the body panel along a periphery of the viewing aperture concealing the light source and the lighting enclosure.

Abstract
A vehicle window assembly includes a vehicle structure, a window panel and a light source. The vehicle structure defines a viewing aperture. The window panel is mounted to the vehicle structure and covers the viewing aperture. The window panel has a peripheral edge surrounding a first window surface and a second window surface opposite the first window surface. The first window surface includes an etched section. The light source is mounted to the vehicle structure adjacent to a portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel such that light from the light source is directed to the portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel. The light travels in a lateral direction through the window panel selectively illuminating the etched section.

a vehicle structure including a body panel that at least partially defines a portion of a vehicle passenger compartment, the body panel defining a viewing aperture; -
a window panel mounted to the body panel and covering the viewing aperture, the window panel having a peripheral edge surrounding a first window surface and a second window surface opposite the first window surface, the first window surface including an etched section, the peripheral edge of the window panel and the body panel defining a lighting enclosure adjacent to the viewing aperture with a portion of the first window surface adjacent to the peripheral edge overlaying a portion of the body panel; a light source mounted directly to the body panel within the lighting enclosure adjacent to the viewing aperture and a portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel such that light from the light source is directed to the portion of the peripheral edge of the window panel and such that the light travels in a lateral direction through the window panel selectively illuminating the etched section; and an exterior trim element installed to the body panel along a periphery of the viewing aperture contacting the second window surface of the window panel and at least partially retaining the window panel to the body panel, and concealing the light source. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18)

19. A vehicle window assembly comprising:
-
a vehicle structure defining a viewing aperture; a window panel mounted to the vehicle structure and covering the viewing aperture, the window panel includes an outer panel and an inner panel, the inner panel having a peripheral edge surrounding a first window surface and a second window surface opposite the first window surface, the first window surface being an interior surface that includes an etched section; a light source mounted to the vehicle structure adjacent to a portion of the peripheral edge of the inner panel such that light from the light source is directed to the portion of the peripheral edge of the inner panel and such that the light travels in a lateral direction through the inner panel selectively illuminating the etched section, the outer panel having an outer peripheral edge that extends laterally beyond the peripheral edge of the inner panel such that the outer panel and the vehicle structure define a lighting enclosure with the light source being concealed therebetween; and a masking material covering at least a section of an inner surface of the outer panel extending inward from the outer peripheral edge of the outer panel to proximate the lighting enclosure such that the light source is concealed by the masking material. - View Dependent Claims (20)
