1. A method of providing client-based filtering of outgoing email content, the method comprising:

  • detecting, by a computer system, an outbound email with a filter implemented on an email client application;

    determining, by the computer system, with the filter whether the outbound email is addressed to a recipient outside of an organization;

    in response to determining the outbound email is addressed to an internal recipient within the organization, allowing the email to be sent without scanning content of the email; and

    in response to determining the outbound email is addressed to an external recipient outside of the organization, determining, by the computer system, using the filter whether to allow the email to be sent, wherein;

    the filter is used to determine;

    whether a length of a string of digits within the content of the email relates to protected information;

    whether one or more formatting characters within the string of digits relate to protected information;

    whether the string of digits comprises specific beginning digits; and

    whether the string of digits is a routing transit number that corresponds to a stored routing transit number in a database accessible by the computer system.
