1. An apparatus for use with a reaction cell having a first electrode and a second electrode, the apparatus comprisinga voltage source providing a controllable voltage to a contact for the first electrode;
- a voltage sensor sensing voltage provided to the contact for the first electrode;
an amplifier; and
a plurality of switches each switchable between first and second positions,wherein when said plurality of switches is in a first switch configuration the amplifier measures current through a contact for the second electrode, thereby measuring current through the reaction cell, and wherein when the switches are in a second switch configuration the amplifier permits measurement of a voltage between the contacts for the first and second electrodes, wherein the plurality of switches comprises first, second and third switches, the first switch connecting the contact for the second electrode and an inverting input of the amplifier, the second switch connecting the contact for the second electrode and a non-inverting input of the amplifier, and the third switch connecting the non-inverting input of the amplifier and a reference voltage, and wherein the first position is defined by the first and third switches being closed and the second switch being open, and the second position is defined by the first and third switches being open and the second switch being closed.

Abstract
The ability to switch at will between amperometric measurements and potentiometric measurements provides great flexibility in performing analysis of unknowns. Apparatus and methods can provide such switching to collect data from an electrochemical cell. The cell may contain a reagent disposed to measure glucose in human blood.
