A method of measuring blood flow in the vertebral artery during cardiac resuscitation, the method comprisingpositioning an ultrasonic probe at the end of a catheter,inserting the probe and catheter into or at the opening of the esophagus,wherein the probe is configured to deliver and measure ultrasonic sound energy posteriorly toward the spine at approximately the cervical vertebra C3-C6, to estimate blood flow in the vertebral artery;

  • andusing a processor, memory, and associated circuitry to process the output of the probe to estimate blood flow achieved by CPR chest compressions in the vertebral artery by ultrasonic Doppler flow measurement.
