1. A computer-implemented method for automatically filtering communication, the method comprising:

  • receiving a request for communication over a communication channel at a recipient communication device from an initiating party using an initiating communication device, wherein the request for communication is addressed to a user of the recipient communication device;

    in response to receiving the request for communication, automatically determining whether the initiating party is already recognized as a contact of the user of the recipient communication device;

    automatically denying the request for communication in response to a determination that the initiating party is not a known contact of the user of the recipient communication device;

    monitoring prior communications between the user of the recipient communication device and a plurality of contacts; and

    generating a social networking model for the user of the recipient communication device based on results of monitoring the prior communications, wherein the social networking model contains identity information for contacts of the user of the recipient communication device;

    wherein the operation of automatically determining whether the initiating party is already recognized as the contact of the user of the recipient communication device comprises searching the social networking model to determine whether the initiating party is already recognized as a contact the user.
