1. A measurement system comprising:

  • (a) a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) adapted to transmit light to an in vivo sample comprising skin, fat, and muscle;

    (b) a detection system adapted to receive light reflected from the sample, wherein the detection system generates a first data set corresponding to a first detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to both muscle within the sample and skin and fat overlying the muscle, and a second data set corresponding to a second detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to skin and fat overlying the muscle; and

    (c) a processor adapted to use spectral absorbance or reflectance values characteristic of the skin and fat from the first data set and the second data set to produce corrected spectral absorbance or reflectance values representing the muscle, wherein the processor is adapted to normalize the first and second data sets prior to producing the corrected spectral absorbance or reflectance values.
