Abstract

A method and corresponding system for use of a femtocell in a vehicle (an “in-vehicle femtocell”) to help limit operation of a wireless communication device (WCD) positioned in the vehicle. In one implementation, registration (or registration attempts) of one or more WCDs with an in-vehicle femtocell may be used as a basis to trigger limitations on certain WCD functions in a vehicle, such as to prevent a WCD from providing text-messaging service for instance. In another implementation, a WCD may receive a signal from an in-vehicle femtocell and in response to the signal, the WCD may register with the femtocell to be served with wireless communication service by the femtocell. In addition to registering with the femtocell, the WCD may limit certain of its own functions while it is in the vehicle and being served with wireless communication service by the femtocell.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

providing a femtocell for use in a vehicle;

receiving into a network a registration request, from the femtocell in the vehicle, to register a wireless communication device (WCD), wherein the registration request seeks registration of the WCD to be served with wireless communication service by the femtocell, the network including a network server; and

based at least in part on the femtocell from which the registration request is received being an in-vehicle femtocell, the network server limiting operation of the WCD while the WCD is in the vehicle and being served by the femtocell.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises blocking voice communications when the WCD is not in a hands-free mode.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises blocking text messaging.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD by sending a service directive to the femtocell that directs the femtocell to limit operation of the WCD.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD by sending a service directive to the WCD that directs the WCD to limit operation of the WCD.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD based at least in part on a determination of whether one or more other WCDs are in the vehicle.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the vehicle is traveling at a speed, and wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD based at least in part on a determination of the speed of the vehicle.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the speed of the vehicle is communicated to the network server by the femtocell.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the vehicle has a drive status, and wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD based at least in part on a determination of the drive status of the vehicle.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein a user of an age is associated with the WCD, and wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD based at least in part on a determination of the age of the user associated with the WCD.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein a user having a user profile is associated with the WCD, and wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises limiting operation of the WCD based at least in part on the user profile.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising, the network server adjusting a limitation of at least one other WCD in the vehicle based at least in part on the registration request being received from the femtocell.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein adjusting a limitation comprises removing the limitation.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising, the network server limiting operation of at least one other WCD in the vehicle based at least in part on a determination that the WCD is no longer in the vehicle.

15. A network server comprising:

a network communication interface;

one or more processors;

data storage; and

program logic executable by the one or more processors to carry out functions including;

(i) receiving a registration request, from a femtocell in a vehicle, to register a wireless communication device (WCD), wherein the registration request seeks registration of the WCD to be served with wireless communication service by the femtocell, and (ii) based at least in part on the femtocell from which the registration request is received being an in-vehicle femtocell, limiting operation of the WCD while the WCD is in the vehicle and being served by the femtocell.

16. The network server of claim 15, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises blocking voice communications when the WCD is not in a hands-free mode.

17. The network server of claim 15, wherein limiting operation of the WCD comprises blocking text messaging.
