Abstract

A golf club with a multi-material face is disclosed herein. More specifically, the golf club head in accordance with the present invention has a striking face that forms a pocket, wherein the pocket is filled with a secondary material having a lower density to improve the performance of the golf club head. The multi-material face disclosed in accordance with the present invention may generally have a characteristic time slope of greater than about 5 and less than about 50, wherein the characteristic time slope is determined based on the various data points collected according to the United States Golf Association'"'"'s (USGA'"'"'s) Characteristic Time (CT) test.

Claims

1. A golf club head comprising:

a hollow unitary shell including a metallic striking face, made out of a first material having a first density, forming at least one opening near a crown portion and a sole portion of said golf club head;

at least one panel configured to cover said at least one opening; and

a face backing layer, made out of second material having a second density, attached to an internal back surface of said striking face of said golf club head;

wherein said golf club head has a volume of greater than about 400 cc and less than about 500 cc;

wherein said second density is lower than said first density,

wherein a thickness of said metallic striking face is between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm, and

wherein said golf club head has a first peak frequency to volume ratio of greater than about 7.0 hertz/cc and less than about 15.0 hertz/cc;

said first peak frequency to volume ratio is defined as a first peak frequency of a signal power diagram of the sound of said golf club head as it impacts a golf ball, divided by a volume of said golf club head.

2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein said face backing layer forms an extension that extends into said crown portion and said sole portion of said golf club head.

3. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein said face backing layer covers over 90% of said internal back surface of said striking face.

4. The golf club head of claim 3, wherein a length of said extension is greater than about 3.0 mm.

5. The golf club head of claim 4, wherein a length of said extension is greater than about 5.0 mm.

6. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein said face backing layer is a carbon fiber based composite material.

7. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said striking face has a constant thickness across the entire striking face.

8. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said striking face has a variable thickness across the said striking face.

9. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said face backing layer has a variable thickness across said internal back surface of said striking face.

10. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said face backing layer has a constant thickness across the entire internal back surface of said striking face.

11. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said thickness of said face backing layer is between about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm.

12. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein said composite material has a strain to failure percentage of greater than about 1.5% and less than about 10.0%.

13. The golf club head of claim 12, wherein said strain to failure percentage is greater than about 2.0% and less than about 8.0%.

14. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein said strain to failure percentage is about 2.5%.

15. A golf club head comprising:

a hollow unitary shell, made out of a first material having a first density, forming at least one opening near a crown portion and a sole portion of said golf club head;

at least one panel configured to cover said at least one opening; and

a composite face backing layer, made out of second material having a second density, attached to an internal back surface of a striking face of said golf club head;

wherein said golf club head has a volume of greater than about 400 cc and less than about 500 cc;

wherein said second density is lower than said first density; and

wherein said golf club head has a first peak frequency to volume ratio of greater than about 7.0 hertz/cc and less than about 15.0 hertz/cc;

said first peak frequency to volume ratio is defined as a first peak frequency of a signal power diagram of the sound of said golf club head as it impacts a golf ball, divided by a volume of said golf club head.

16. The golf club head of claim 15, wherein said composite face backing layer is attached to said internal back surface of said striking face using a method comprising;

inserting a bladder into said golf club head via opening;

inflating said bladder until at least a portion of said composite face backing layer juxtaposes against said internal back surface; and

deflating said bladder to allow it to be extrapolated from said golf club head via said opening.

17. The golf club head of claim 15, wherein said second density is less than about 1.70 g/cm³.

18. The golf club head of claim 17, wherein said striking face has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm.
