Abstract

Phacoemulsification apparatus includes a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle and an electrical system for ultrasonically vibrating said needle along with a power source for providing pulsed electrical power to the handpiece electrical system. Irrigation fluid is provided to the handpiece needle and aspirating fluid is removed from the handpiece needle. A determination of a voltage current phase relationship of the provided electrical power is made and in response thereto a control system varies a power level duty cycle provided to the handpiece electrical system from the power source and/or modify the aspiration flow rate. In addition, a separate input enables manual control of pulse amplitude. The control system provides a pulsed electrical power of less than 20 millisecond pulse duration.

Claims

1. An ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus comprising:

a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle, the needle configured to be ultrasonically vibrated;

a power source configured to provide a pulse of electrical power to the handpiece that causes the needle to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis; and

a computer programmed to control the power source such that the pulse of electrical power to the handpiece that causes the needle to be driven along its longitudinal axis has a pulse repetition rate in a range greater than 25 pulses per second and less than 2000 pulses per second.

2. The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an off duty cycle in between the pulses of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent pulse of electrical power is activated.

3. The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is a period of no power to the needle that causes the needle to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis in between the pulses of electrical power.

The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is a period where a minimal amount of power, as compared to the power during one of the pulses, is applied to the needle that causes the needle to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis in between the pulses of electrical power.

5. The lens extraction apparatus according to claim 1, further including a switch configured to receive manual input of an ultrasonic power amplitude.

6. The lens extraction apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said switch comprises a footswitch.

7. The lens extraction apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said switch enables a linear selection of the ultrasonic power amplitude.

8. An ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus comprising:

a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle, the needle configured to be ultrasonically vibrated;

a power source configured to apply a cycle of electrical power to the handpiece, wherein the power within the cycle is applied at a frequency that causes the needle to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis; and

a computer programmed to control the power source such that the cycle of electrical power has a duration of less than twenty (20) milliseconds.

9. The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that the cycle of electrical power repeats at a rate in a range greater than 25 pulses per second and less than 2000 pulses per second and such that there is an off duty cycle in between the cycles of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent cycle of electrical power is activated.

The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that the cycle of electrical power repeats and such that there is a period of no power to the needle that causes the needle to be driven along its longitudinal axis in between the cycles of electrical power.

The ophthalmic lens extraction apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that the cycle of electrical power repeats and such that there is a period where a minimal amount of power is applied to the needle that causes the needle to be driven along its longitudinal axis in between the cycles of electrical power.

12. A method for operating a phacoemulsification system, the system including a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle having a longitudinal axis and a power source configured to provide electrical power to the handpiece, said method comprising:

applying one or more cycles of electrical power from the power source to the handpiece, wherein the electrical power within the one or more cycles is applied at a frequency that causes the needle of the handpiece to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis, wherein each of the one or more cycles of electrical power has a period of less than twenty (20) milliseconds.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising controlling the power provided to the handpiece to have the one or more cycles of electrical power repeat at a rate in a range greater than 25 cycles per second and less than 2000 cycles per second.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval of no power being applied to the handpiece in between the one or more cycles of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent cycle of electrical power is activated.

15. The method of claim 12, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the one or more cycles of electrical power where there is no power applied to the handpiece that drives the needle generally along its longitudinal axis.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the one or more cycles of electrical power where electrical power applied to the handpiece that causes the needle to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis is minimized.

17. A method for operating a phacoemulsification system, the system including a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle having a longitudinal axis and a power source configured to provide electrical power to the handpiece, said method comprising:

applying a pulse of electrical power from the power source to the handpiece, wherein the electrical power within the pulse is applied at a frequency that causes the needle of the handpiece to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis;

repetitively applying the pulse of electrical power at a rate in a range greater than 25 pulses per second and less than 2000 pulses per second.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval of no power being applied to the handpiece in between the pulses of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent pulse of electrical power is activated.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the pulses of electrical power where there is no power applied to the handpiece that drives the needle generally along its longitudinal axis.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the pulses of electrical power where power applied to the handpiece that causes the needle to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis is minimized as compared to the pulses of electrical power.
