Abstract

The described method and system provide for processing telematics service-related calls on a telematics-equipped vehicle when the vehicle ignition is off. By utilizing one or more call timers, the described invention is able to prevent excessive drain to the vehicle battery while still providing broad access to telematics services when the vehicle ignition is off. Certain types of calls may be excepted from the call timers, and different types of calls may use different call timers. A call center may also intervene and modify the process by changing the values of the timers.

Claims

1. A method for processing calls at a telematics unit on a telematics-equipped vehicle, the method comprising:

determining, at the telematics unit, that an ongoing call is active when vehicle ignition is switched to an off state;

determining that the ongoing call is not a call that is excepted from a call timer;

activating the call timer in response to determining that the ongoing call is not excepted;

operating the call timer to measure an elapsed time during the ongoing call and while the vehicle ignition is in the off state; and

determining, based upon the elapsed time measured by the call timer, that the call timer has reached an expiration and, in response to the expiration, the telematics unit terminating the ongoing call and transitioning into a discontinuous receive (DRx) mode.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

resetting the call timer when the vehicle ignition is switched to an on state.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein, after the call timer has reached the expiration, the telematics unit does not allow further non-excepted calls to be made via the telematics unit until the call timer is reset.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

activating a digital sleep mode time-out (DSMT) timer in response to transitioning the telematics unit into the DRx mode;

operating the DSMT timer while the telematics unit is in the DRx mode; and

determining that the DSMT timer has reached an expiration and transitioning the telematics unit into an off mode in response thereto.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

resetting the DSMT timer when the vehicle ignition is switched to an on state.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the ongoing call is not a call that is excepted from a call timer comprises determining that the ongoing call is not an emergency call.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having processor-executable instructions stored thereon for processing calls at a telematics unit on a telematics-equipped vehicle, the processor-executable instructions, when executed by a processor, causing the following to be performed:

determining that an ongoing call is active when vehicle ignition is switched to an off state;

determining that the ongoing call is not a call that is excepted from a call timer;

activating the call timer in response to determining that the ongoing call is not excepted;

operating the call timer to measure an elapsed time during the ongoing call and while the vehicle ignition is in the off state; and

determining, based upon the elapsed time measured by the call timer, that the call timer has reached an expiration and, in response to the expiration, the telematics unit terminating the ongoing call and transitioning into a discontinuous receive (DRx) mode.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the processor-executable instructions further cause the following to be performed:

resetting the call timer when the vehicle ignition is switched to an on state.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8, wherein, after the call timer has reached the expiration, the telematics unit does not allow further non-excepted calls to be made via the telematics unit until the call timer is reset.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the processor-executable instructions further cause the following to be performed:

activating a digital sleep mode time-out (DSMT) timer in response to transitioning the telematics unit into the DRx mode;

operating the DSMT timer while the telematics unit is in the DRx mode; and

determining that the DSMT timer has reached an expiration and transitioning the telematics unit into an off mode in response thereto.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the processor-executable instructions further cause the following to be performed:

resetting the DSMT timer when the vehicle ignition is switched to an on state.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein determining that the ongoing call is not a call that is excepted from a call timer comprises determining that the ongoing call is not an emergency call.

13. A method for processing calls at a telematics unit on a telematics-equipped vehicle, the method comprising:

facilitating, at the telematics unit, a first call while vehicle ignition is in an off state;

determining that the first call is of a first call type;

operating a first call timer associated with the first call type to measure a first elapsed time while the first call is ongoing;

facilitating, at the telematics unit, a second call while the vehicle ignition is in the off state;

determining that the second call is of a second call type, wherein the second call type has a calling protocol that consumes more power than a calling protocol of the first call type;

operating a second call timer associated with the second call type to measure a second elapsed time while the second call is ongoing; and

determining, based upon the elapsed time measured by the second call timer, that the second call timer has reached an expiration and, in response to the expiration, the telematics unit terminating the second call and transitioning into a discontinuous receive (DRx) mode.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

determining that the first call timer has reached an expiration and, in response thereto, incrementing the second call timer while the first call is ongoing; and

terminating the first call in response to determining that both the first and second call timers have reached expiration.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first call type are packet-switched call types and the second call type are non-packet-switched call types.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

resetting the first and second call timers when the vehicle ignition is switched to an on state.

17. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

determining that the first call is not a call that is excepted from call timers; and

determining that the second call is not a call that is excepted from call timers.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein determining that the first call is not a call that is excepted from call timers comprises determining that the first call is not an emergency call, and wherein determining that the second call is not a call that is excepted from call timers comprises determining that the second call is not an emergency call.
