Abstract

A water-quality monitoring system for an aquatic environment that includes a monitoring unit and a chemical indicator wheel designed and configured to be submerged in the water being monitored. The chemical indicator wheel includes a holder that supports a number of chemical indicators selected for use in measuring levels of constituents of the water. When in use, the wheel is drivingly engaged with a monitoring/measuring unit that includes at least one reader for reading the chemical indicators. In some embodiments, each apparatus includes a plurality of immobilized-dye-based chemical indicators that undergo an optically detectable physical change as levels of one or more constituents of the water change. Also disclosed are a variety of features that can be used to provide the monitoring system with additional functionalities.

Claims

1. A water-quality monitoring system for monitoring quality of water in an aquatic environment, comprising:

a chemical indicator wheel designed and configured to be submerged in the water of the aquatic environment during monitoring of changes in levels of one or more constituents of the water, said chemical indicator wheel including;

a holder having a rotational axis; and

a plurality of chemical indicators fixedly supported by said holder, wherein said plurality of chemical indicators are designed and configured to continuously undergo optically detectable changes in response to increasing and decreasing changes over time in levels of corresponding respective differing constituents of the water; and

a monitoring unit that includes;

an optical reader designed and configured to acquire optical readings of each of said plurality of indicators; and

a drive system designed and configured to drive said chemical indicator wheel to at least one reading position for each of said plurality of chemical indicators, wherein said optical reader can take a reading of each of said plurality of chemical indicators while the chemical indicator wheel is submerged in the water of the aquatic environment.

2. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said holder is discoidal in shape.

3. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of indicators is an immobilized-dye indicator.

4. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 3, wherein said chemical indicator wheel includes at least four immobilized-dye indicators.

A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said optical reader includes at least one light source, at least one detector, and a combined illuminator/light collector designed and configured to, sequentially, direct light from said at least one light source to each of said plurality of chemical indicators, and to collect, sequentially, from each of said plurality of chemical indicators.

A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 5, wherein said optical reader includes a plurality of light sources, said combined illuminator/light collector including spot lensing designed and configured to direct light from said plurality of light sources so as to form a corresponding plurality of illumination spots, sequentially, on each of said plurality of chemical indicators.

7. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 5, wherein said optical reader includes a light detector, said combined illuminator/light collector including a central light conductor for conducting collected light to said light detector.

A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 7, wherein said combined illuminator/light collector further includes dispersive lensing located adjacent to said spot lensing so as to disperse a portion of light emitted by each of said plurality of light sources away from each of said corresponding plurality of illumination spots.

9. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said drive system comprises a plurality of paddles designed and configured to be driven by flow of the water.

10. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said drive system includes a magnetic coupling between said chemical indicator wheel and said monitoring unit.

11. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 10, wherein said drive system includes a stepper motor that drives a magnet holder.

12. A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 10, wherein said drive system includes a plurality of magnetic elements driven to sequentially attract a plurality of magnetic elements on said chemical indicator wheel so as to impart rotation to said chemical indicator wheel.

A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said chemical indicator wheel includes a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag that stores calibration data for said plurality of chemical indicators, and said monitoring unit includes an RFID tag reader for reading said RFID tag.

A water-quality monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein said optical reader includes an optic having a surface exposed to said water, and said indicator wheel includes a cleaning element designed, configured, and located for cleaning said surface of said optic when said chemical indicator wheel is driven.

A water-quality monitoring unit for monitoring quality of water in an aquatic environment, wherein the monitoring unit is designed and configured to rotatably drive a chemical indicator wheel designed and configured to be submerged in the water of the aquatic environment during monitoring of changes in levels of one or more constituents in the water, the chemical indicator wheel having a rotational axis and including a plurality of chemical indicators designed and configured to undergo optically detectable changes in response to increasing and decreasing changes over time in levels of corresponding respective differing constituents of the water, the monitoring unit including:

an optical reader designed and configured to acquire optical readings of each of the plurality of indicators; and

a drive system designed and configured to drive said chemical indicator wheel to at least one reading position for each of said plurality of chemical indicators, wherein said optical reader can take a reading each of said plurality of chemical indicators while the chemical indicator wheel is submerged in the water of the aquatic environment.

A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 15, wherein said optical reader includes at least one light source, at least one detector, and a combined illuminator/light collector designed and configured to, sequentially, direct light from said at least one light source to each of the plurality of chemical indicators, and to collect, sequentially, light from each of the plurality of chemical indicators.

A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 16, wherein said optical reader includes a plurality of light sources, said combined illuminator/light collector including spot lensing designed and configured to direct light from said plurality of light sources so as to form a corresponding plurality of illumination spots, sequentially, on each of the plurality of chemical indicators.

18. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 17, wherein said optical reader includes a light detector, said combined illuminator/light collector including a central light conductor for conducting collected light to said light detector.

A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 18, wherein said combined illuminator/light collector further includes dispersive lensing located adjacent to said spot lensing so as to disperse a portion of light emitted by each of said plurality of light sources away from each of said corresponding plurality of illumination spots.

20. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 15, wherein said drive system comprises a plurality of paddles designed and configured to be driven by flow of the water.

21. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 15, wherein said drive system includes a magnetic coupling between the chemical indicator wheel and the monitoring unit.

22. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 21, wherein said drive system includes a stepper motor that drives a magnet holder.

23. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 21, wherein said drive system includes a plurality of magnetic elements driven to sequentially attract a plurality of magnetic elements on the chemical indicator wheel so as to impart rotation to the chemical indicator wheel.

24. A water-quality monitoring unit according to claim 15, wherein the chemical indicator wheel includes a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag that stores calibration data for the plurality of chemical indicators, and said monitoring unit includes an RFID tag reader for reading the RFID tag.
