Abstract

Apparatus and methods for a passive range finding proximity detector include a sensor element configured to detect infrared radiation emitted by objects within a detection area. The sensor is configured to detect the temperature, relative size, relative distance, speed or direction of movement of an object from the sensor. The sensor is configured to set parameters for a controlled object based upon the detected size, temperature and/or proximity, speed or direction of an object in relation to one or more size thresholds, temperature thresholds, and/or proximity, speed or direction thresholds.

Claims

1. A passive proximity detecting device for detecting humans within a detection area and controlling a controlled device, comprising:

a sensor comprising a pixel configured to detect infrared radiation emitted by an object in a predetermined temperature range within said detection area, and in response to detecting said object generate a detection signal having a signal level proportional to said infrared radiation emitted by said object received by said sensor; and

a processor in communication with said sensor, said processor configured to receive said detection signal, and to derive an object distance using, at least in part, a signal level of said detection signal.

2. The proximity detecting device of claim 1, wherein said sensor is further configured to detect an ambient temperature of said detection area.

3. The proximity detecting device of claim 2, wherein;

said pixel is one of a pixel array comprising a plurality of pixels; and

said processor is further configured to derive an object size based at least in part on said detection signal.

4. The proximity detecting device of claim 3, wherein said processor is further configured to determine if said object size is within a predetermined size range.

5. The proximity detecting device of claim 4, wherein said processor is further configured to perform a third predetermined action if said size is within said predetermined size range.

6. The proximity detecting device of claim 5, wherein said third predetermined action is configuring a third parameter state of said controlled device.

7. The proximity detecting device of claim 3, wherein said processor is further configured to derive an object position based at least in part on said detection signal.

8. The proximity detecting device of claim 7, wherein said processor is further configured to determine if said object position is within a predetermined position range.

9. The proximity detecting device of claim 8, wherein said processor is further configured to perform a third predetermined action if said position is within said predetermined position range.

10. The proximity detecting device of claim 9, wherein said third predetermined action is configuring a third parameter state of said controlled device.

11. The proximity detection device of claim 7, wherein said processor is further configured to derive an object speed and an object direction.

12. The proximity detecting device of claim 11, wherein said processor is further configured to determine if said object speed and object direction are within a predetermined speed and direction range.

13. The proximity detecting device of claim 12, wherein said processor is further configured to perform a third predetermined action if said object speed and object direction are within said predetermined speed and direction range.

14. The proximity detecting device of claim 13, wherein said third predetermined action is configuring a third parameter state of said controlled device.

15. The proximity detecting device of claim 1, wherein said processor is further configured to determine if said object distance is within a predetermined distance range.

16. The proximity detecting device of claim 15, wherein said processor is further configured to perform a first predetermined action if said distance is within said predetermined distance range.

17. The proximity detecting device of claim 16, wherein said first predetermined action is configuring a first parameter state of said controlled device.

18. The proximity detecting device of claim 16, wherein said processor is further configured to performing a second predetermined action if said distance is not within said predetermined distance range.

19. The proximity detecting device of claim 18, wherein said second predetermined action is configuring a second parameter state of said controlled device.

20. The proximity detecting device of claim 15, wherein said processor is further configured to receive said predetermined distance range.

21. A method of detecting an object in a detection area of an infrared sensor comprising a pixel, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a signal from said infrared sensor;

determining if said signal indicates detection of a warm object in a predetermined temperature range using, at least in part, a signal level of said signal proportional to infrared radiation emitted by said warm object received by said sensor; and

if said warm object is detected, determining a distance of said warm object from said sensor using, at least in part, the signal level.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising the step of determining an ambient temperature.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising the step of setting a first state based at least in part on said distance.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising the step of controlling a first device parameter based on said first state.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein said infrared sensor comprises a plurality of sensor pixels.

26. The method of claim 25, further comprising the step of determining a size of said warm object.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising the step of setting a second state based at least in part on said size.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising the step of controlling a second device parameter based on said second state.

29. The method of claim 26, further comprising the step of setting a third state based at least in part on said number.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising the step of controlling a third device parameter based on said third state.

31. The method of claim 25, further comprising the step of determining a number of pixels detecting said warm object.

32. The method of claim 25, further comprising the step of deriving an object position based at least in part on said signal.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising the step of determining if said object position is within a predetermined position range.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising the step of setting a second state based at least in part on if said object position is within said predetermined position range.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising the step of controlling a third device parameter based on said second state.

36. The method of claim 33, further comprising the steps of:

determining if said object speed and said object direction are within a predetermined speed and direction range; and

if said object speed and said object direction are within said predetermined speed and direction range, performing a second predetermined action.

37. The method of claim 32, further comprising the steps of:

deriving an object speed; and

deriving an object direction.

38. A system for sensing the presence of a human, comprising:

a passive infrared emissions sensor;

a processor in communication with said sensor; and

a non-transitory computer readable media configured to perform the steps of;

receiving a signal from said infrared sensor array;

determining if said signal indicates detection of a warm object in a predetermined temperature range using, at least in part, a signal level of said signal proportional to infrared radiation emitted by said warm object received by said sensor;

setting a first state based upon whether said warm object is detected;

controlling a first device parameter based on said first state;

if said warm object is detected, determining a distance of said warm object from said sensor, setting a second state based at least in part on said distance; and

controlling a second device parameter based on said second state.

39. A passive proximity detecting device for detecting objects within a detection area and controlling a controlled device, comprising:

a sensor comprising a pixel configured to detect infrared radiation emitted by an object in a predetermined temperature range of a healthy human body within said detection area, and in response to detecting said object generate a detection signal having a signal level proportional to said infrared radiation emitted by said object received by said sensor; and

a processor in communication with said sensor, said processor configured to perform the steps of;

receiving said detection signal;

deriving an object distance using, at least in part, a signal level of said detection signal;

determining if said object distance is within a predetermined distance range; and

configuring a first parameter state of said controlled device.
