Abstract

A window cover system includes an extendible window cover with a pair of lift cords. A lift cord pulley shaft is coupled to a pair of spaced apart lift cord pulleys. A spring drive unit has a beveled gear system with a first gear that is spring biased to resist rotation of first gear in one direction of rotation, and a second gear meshed with the first gear. The lift cord pulley shaft extends through the second gear and is configured to rotate therewith.

Claims

1. A window cover system, comprising:

an extendable window cover, the window cover having a pair of lift cords;

a lift cord pulley shaft coupled to a pair of spaced apart lift cord pulleys, wherein the lift cords are configured to wind and unwind around the lift cord pulleys when the lift cord pulley shaft is rotated;

a spring drive unit having a beveled gear system with a first gear that is spring biased to resist rotation of the first gear in one direction of rotation, and a second gear meshed with the first gear, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft extends through the second gear and is configured to rotate therewith, and wherein the spring drive unit is positioned between the two lift pulleys.

2. A system as in claim 1, wherein the window cover further comprises a first rail and a second rail, wherein the first rail is movable relative to the second rail to wind and unwind the lift cords around the lift cord pulleys and operate the spring drive unit.

3. A system as in claim 2, wherein the first rail is an upper rail, wherein the second rail is a lower rail, and wherein the lower rail is lifted relative to the upper rail to operate the spring drive unit.

4. A system as in claim 1, wherein the window cover system includes internal friction, and wherein the internal friction holds the first rail in place until moved by an external force.

5. A system as in claim 1, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft passes through the second gear such that one end portion of the lift cord pulley shaft passes though one of the lift cord pulleys and an opposite end portion of the lift cord pulley shaft passes through the other lift cord pulley.

6. A system as in claim 1, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft is laterally spaced apart from the first gear.

7. A system as in claim 1, wherein the second gear is smaller in diameter than the first gear.

8. A system as in claim 1, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft rotates about an axis that is perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the first gear.

9. A system as in claim 1, wherein the spring drive unit comprises a spring that extends between two spools, and wherein the lift cord pulley shaft does not pass through either of the spools of the spring drive unit.

10. A system as in claim 1, further comprising a plurality of spring drive units positioned between the two pulleys.

11. A system as in claim 1, wherein each pulley is configured to produce single layer wind with the lift cord.

12. A system as in claim 1, further comprising a housing which houses the lift cord pulley shaft and the spring drive unit, and a wall positioned between each of the lift cord pulleys and spring drive unit, with the lift cord pulley shaft passing through each of the walls.

13. A window cover system, comprising:

an extendable window cover, the window cover having a pair of lift cords;

a lift cord pulley shaft coupled to a pair of spaced apart lift pulleys, wherein the lift cords are configured to wind and unwind around the lift cord pulleys when the lift cord pulley shaft is rotated;

a plurality of spring drive units that each comprise a beveled gear system with a first gear that is spring biased to resist rotation of the first gear in one direction of rotation, and a second gear meshed with the first gear, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft extends through the second gear and is configured to rotate therewith, and wherein at least one of the spring drive units is positioned between the two lift pulleys.

14. A window cover system, comprising:

a housing having a length, a height and a depth, wherein the length is configured to extend lengthwise horizontally across a top portion of a window frame, wherein the housing has a longitudinal axis that extends along the length, and wherein the height is perpendicular to the length, wherein the housing has a vertical axis that is configured to extend vertically from the top portion of the window frame;

an extendable window cover having a first end that is configured to hang generally parallel to the longitudinal axis, a second end that is generally parallel to the first end, and at least one lift cord that is operably coupled to a lift cord pulley, wherein the window cover is movable between an extended position wherein the second end is spaced apart from the first end and a retracted position where the second end is placed in proximity to the first end;

a spring drive system that is operably coupled to the lift cord, wherein the spring drive system comprises a lift cord pulley shaft that is coupled to the lift cord pulley so as to rotate therewith, the spring drive system further comprising a spring drive unit comprising at least one spring having a storage end that is operably coupled to a storage shaft and an output end that is operably coupled to an output shaft, a bevel gear set having a first gear operatively connected to the spring drive output shaft and a second gear operably connected to the lift cord pulley shaft,

wherein the storage shaft and the output shafts each have a shaft axis that are parallel to each other and to the vertical axis, wherein the second gear rotates about a second gear axis that is parallel to the longitudinal axis and perpendicular to the storage shaft axis and the output shaft axis.

15. A system as in claim 14, wherein the second gear has a gear shaft that is coaxial with the lift cord pulley shaft, and wherein the lift cord pulley shaft and is parallel to the longitudinal axis.

A system as in claim 14, further comprising a wall located near one end of the housing, wherein the wall is aligned with the vertical axis, and wherein the lift cord pulley shaft extends through the wall so as to be supported by the wall, and wherein the lift cord pulley is in a plane parallel to the wall.

17. A system as in claim 14, wherein at least one of the output shaft and the storage shaft is coupled to the housing.

18. A system as in claim 14, wherein the output shaft and the storage shaft are spaced apart from each other and wherein a line extending between the output shaft and the storage shaft is aligned with the longitudinal axis.

19. A system as in claim 14, wherein the first gear is coupled about the output shaft.

20. A system as in claim 14, wherein the lift cord pulley shaft is laterally spaced apart from the output shaft and the storage shaft.

21. A system as in claim 14, wherein the lift cord pulley is a first lift cord pulley and further comprising a second lift cord pulley, wherein the first and second lift cord pulleys are spaced apart from each other so as to be on opposite sides of the spring drive system and are disposed within the housing.

22. A system as in claim 14, wherein the spring drive unit is configured to be rotationally coupled to only the lift cord pulley shaft.

23. A system as in claim 14, where the output shaft has two ends, and wherein one end terminates at the housing so as to not extend outside the housing.

24. A system as in claim 14, wherein the second gear is positioned between the two lift cord pulleys.

25. A system as in claim 14, wherein the gears have diameters that are different from each other.

26. A window cover system, comprising:

a cellular window covering and at least a pair of lift cords;

a drive system operable when moving the window covering between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein the drive system comprises a lift cord pulley shaft coupled to a pair of lift cord pulleys, and a plurality of spring drive units, wherein each spring drive unit comprises a beveled gear system with a first gear that is spring biased to resist rotation of the first gear in one direction of rotation, and a second gear meshed with the first gear, wherein each spring drive unit is coupled to the lift cord pulley drive shaft via the second gear so as to hold the second end of the cover in place by tension of the spring drive units and inherent friction in the window cover.

27. A system as in claim 26, wherein the spring drive units are positioned between the two lift cord pulleys.

28. A system as in claim 26, wherein each pulley is configured to produce single layer wind with the lift cord.
