Abstract

A breathing assistance apparatus and method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus is disclosed. Particularly, the breathing assistance apparatus is controlled such that it has a drying cycle to enable drying of the tubing that supplies gases to a user and prevent the harboring of pathogens within the tube. The drying cycle is preferably operated automatically by internal controllers in the apparatus. However, it may be manually activated by pressing a button on the apparatus. The drying cycle is preferably activated at the end of a user'"'"'s treatment session.

Claims

1. A breathing assistance apparatus adapted to deliver humidified gases at a desired level of humidity, flow and temperature for treatment of a patient comprising:

a) gases supply means providing a flow of gases,

b) a humidifier having a chamber adapted to receive a volume of water and a chamber heater to heat said water in said chamber, said chamber including an inlet and an outlet,

c) transportation pathway means to convey said humidified gases from said humidifier to said patient, said pathway means comprising a pathway heater having a distal end and a proximal end, the proximal end being adjacent the humidifier, and

d) a controller having stored instructions to complete the following steps following the end of said treatment of said patient;

i) switch off power to said chamber heater,

ii) set said flow of gases from said gases supply means to a predetermined flow for a predetermined time, wherein said pathway heater is adapted to deliver heat to said flow of gases during at least a portion of the predetermined time, and said power is switched off to said chamber heater for at least a portion of the predetermined time, and

iii) after said predetermined time switch off said gases supply means.

2. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said apparatus further comprises:

a) an outlet temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at said outlet to said chamber,

b) a distal temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at the distal end of the transportation pathway means,

c) an ambient temperature sensor measuring ambient air temperature, and said controller includes stored instructions to;

i) control said pathway heater over said predetermined time such that the temperature of said gases at the distal end of said transportation pathway means, as sensed by said distal temperature sensor does not exceed a safe temperature level, and

ii) monitor said outlet gases temperature sensor and said ambient air temperature sensor, compare said outlet gases temperature and said ambient air temperature and when these are substantially equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases supply means and said pathway heater.

3. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said outlet temperature sensor is positioned at said outlet to said chamber.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said apparatus further comprises a chamber heater temperature sensor measuring said chamber heater temperature, and said controller includes stored instructions to monitor said chamber heater temperature sensor, outlet gases temperature sensor, and ambient air temperature sensor, and to compare said chamber heater temperature, said outlet gases temperature, and said ambient air temperature and when these are equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases supply means and said pathway heater.

5. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said apparatus further comprises:

a) a distal temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at the distal end of the transportation pathway means,

b) an ambient temperature sensor measuring ambient air temperature, and

c) a chamber heater temperature sensor measuring said chamber heater temperature, and said controller includes stored instructions to;

i) control said pathway heater over said predetermined time such that the temperature of said gases at the distal end of said transportation pathway means, as sensed by said distal temperature sensor does not exceed a safe temperature level, and

ii) monitor said chamber heater temperature sensor and ambient air temperature sensor, compare said chamber heater temperature and said ambient air temperature and when these are substantially equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases supply means and said pathway heater.

6. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said transportation pathway means is an extruded plastic tube, and said pathway heater is at least two conductive wires embedded within, throughout or about the wall of said tube.

7. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller includes stored instructions to determine said end of said treatment when said patient activates an off button connected to said controller.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said apparatus further comprises a patient interface sensor, and said controller includes stored instructions to determine said end of said treatment when said patient interface sensor detects that said patient has removed said patient interface for a predetermined period of time.

9. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller includes stored instructions to determine said end of treatment when a substantial increase of flow of gases is detected exiting said gas supply means for a predetermined period of time.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said apparatus further comprises a patient interface sensor, and said controller includes stored instructions to determine said end of treatment when said patient interface sensor senses that said patient'"'"'s breathing through said patient interface has ceased for a predetermined period of time.

11. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the predetermined flow increases from a first flow rate to a second flow rate during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

12. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the predetermined flow comprises pulses of gas flow during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

13. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a first flow rate of the flow of gases during at least a portion of the treatment is less than a second flow rate of the predetermined flow.

14. A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus where said apparatus is adapted to deliver humidified gases at a desired level of humidity, flow and temperature for treatment of a patient, said apparatus comprising a gases source adapted to provide a flow of gases, a humidifier having a chamber adapted to receive a volume of water and a chamber heater adapted to heat said water in said chamber, a conduit adapted to convey said humidified gases from said humidifier adjacent a proximal end of the conduit to said patient adjacent a distal end of said conduit, said conduit comprising a heater, and a controller that stores a program which causes the controller after the end of said treatment of said patient to:

a) switch off power to said chamber heater,

b) set said flow of gases from said gases source to a predetermined flow for a predetermined time, wherein said conduit heater is adapted to deliver heat to said flow of gases during at least a portion of the predetermined time, and said power is switched off to said chamber heater for at least a portion of the predetermined time, and

c) after said predetermined time switch off said gases source.

A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said conduit further comprises an outlet temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at an outlet to said chamber, a distal temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at the distal end of the conduit, an ambient temperature sensor measuring ambient air temperature, and said program further causes said controller to:

a) control said conduit heater over said predetermined time such that the temperature of said gases at the distal end of said conduit, as sensed by said distal temperature sensor does not exceed a safe temperature level, and

b) monitor said outlet gases temperature sensor and said ambient air temperature sensor, compare said outlet gases temperature and said ambient air temperature and when these are substantially equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases source and said pathway heater.

16. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said outlet temperature sensor is positioned at said outlet to said chamber.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 15, further comprising a chamber heater temperature sensor measuring said chamber heater temperature, and said program further causes said controller to monitor said outlet gases temperature sensor, said chamber heater temperature sensor, and said ambient air temperature sensor, and to compare said outlet gases temperature, said chamber heater temperature, and said ambient air temperature and when these are equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases source and said pathway heater.

A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein apparatus further comprises a distal temperature sensor measuring the temperature of said gases at the distal end of the conduit, an ambient temperature sensor measuring ambient air temperature, a chamber heater temperature sensor measuring said chamber heater temperature, and said program further causes said controller to:

a) control said pathway heater over said predetermined time such that the temperature of said gases at the distal end of said conduit, as sensed by said distal temperature sensor does not exceed a safe temperature level, and

b) monitor said chamber heater temperature sensor and ambient air temperature sensor, compare said chamber heater temperature and said ambient air temperature and when these are substantially equal end said predetermined time and switch off said gases source and said conduit heater.

19. A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said program further causes said controller to determine said end of said treatment when said patient activates an off button connected to said controller.

A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said apparatus further comprises a patient interface sensor and said program further causes said controller to determine said end of said treatment when said patient interface sensor detects that said patient has removed a patient interface for a predetermined period of time.

21. A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said program further causes said controller to determine said end of treatment when a substantial increase of flow of gases is detected exiting said gas source for a predetermined period of time.

A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said apparatus further comprises a patient interface sensor and said program further causes said controller to determine said end of treatment when said patient interface sensor senses that said patient'"'"'s breathing through a patient interface has ceased for a predetermined period of time.

23. A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the predetermined flow increases from a first flow rate to a second flow rate during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

24. A method of controlling a breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the predetermined flow comprises pulses of gas flow during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

25. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 14, wherein a first flow rate of the flow of gases during at least a portion of the treatment is less than a second flow rate of the predetermined flow.

26. A breathing assistance apparatus adapted to deliver humidified gases at a desired level of humidity, flow and temperature for treatment of a patient, the apparatus comprising a gases source that is adapted to provide a flow of gases, a humidifier chamber that is adapted to receive the flow of gases, the humidifier chamber also adapted to receive a volume of water, a chamber heater adapted to heat the volume of water, the humidifier chamber comprising an inlet and an outlet, a conduit having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end being connected to the outlet of the humidifier, the conduit being adapted to convey the flow of gases from the outlet of the humidifier toward the distal end of the conduit, the conduit comprising a conduit heater, the apparatus comprising a controller, the controller comprising stored instructions to complete the following steps following the end of said treatment of the patient:

i) switch off power to the chamber heater;

ii) set the flow of gases from the gases source to a predetermined flow for a predetermined time, wherein the conduit heater is adapted to heat the flow of gases during at least a portion of the predetermined time; and

said power is switched off to said chamber heater for at least a portion of the predetermined time, and,

iii) after the predetermined time, stop the flow of gases from the gases source.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, further comprising an outlet temperature sensor adapted to measure a temperature of the gases flow at the outlet of the humidifier chamber, a distal temperature sensor adapted to measure the temperature of the gases flow at the distal end of the conduit, and an ambient temperature sensor adapted to measure ambient air temperature, the controller comprising stored instructions to:

i) control the conduit heater over the predetermined time such that the temperature of the flow of gases at the distal end of the conduit as sensed by the distal temperature sensor does not exceed a predetermined temperature level; and

ii) monitor the outlet temperature sensor and the ambient temperature sensor, compare the outlet temperature and the ambient temperature and, when the outlet temperature and the ambient temperature are substantially equal, end the predetermined time and stop the flow of gases from the gases source and turn off the conduit heater.

28. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 27, wherein said outlet temperature sensor is positioned at said outlet to said chamber.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 27, further comprising a chamber heater temperature sensor adapted to measure the chamber heater temperature, and wherein the controller comprises stored instructions to monitor the outlet temperature sensor, the chamber heater temperature sensor, and the ambient temperature sensor, and to compare the outlet temperature, the chamber heater temperature, and the ambient temperature and, when the outlet temperature, the chamber heater temperature, and the ambient temperature are equal, end the predetermined time and stop the flow of gases from the gases source and turn off the conduit heater.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, further comprising a distal temperature sensor adapted to measure a temperature of the gases flow at the distal end of the conduit, an ambient temperature sensor adapted to measure an ambient air temperature, and a chamber heater temperature sensor adapted to measure the chamber heater temperature, and the controller comprising stored instructions to:

i) control the conduit heater over the predetermined time such that the temperature of the gases at the distal end of the conduit, as sensed by the distal temperature sensor does not exceed a predetermined temperature level; and

,

ii) monitor the chamber heater temperature sensor and ambient air temperature sensor, compare the chamber heater temperature and the ambient air temperature and, when the chamber heater temperature and the ambient air temperature are substantially equal, end the predetermined time, stop the flow of gases from the gases source and turn off the conduit heater.

31. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the conduit comprises a plastic tube comprising a wall and the conduit heater comprises at least two conductive wires embedded within, throughout or about the wall of the plastic tube.

32. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the controller comprises stored instructions to determine the end of the treatment when the patient activates an off button connected to the controller.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the apparatus further comprises a patient interface sensor, and the controller comprises stored instructions to determine the end of the treatment when, for a predetermined period of time, the patient interface sensor detects that the patient has removed the patient interface.

34. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the controller comprises stored instructions to determine the end of the treatment when the flow of gases experiences a substantial increase for a predetermined period of time.

A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26 further comprising a patient interface sensor, and the controller comprises stored instructions to determine the end of the treatment when, for a predetermined period of time, the patient interface sensor detects that breathing through the patient interface has ceased.

36. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the flow of gases increases from a first flow rate to a second flow rate during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

37. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the flow of gases comprises pulses of gas flow during at least a portion of the predetermined time.

38. A breathing assistance apparatus according to claim 26, wherein a first flow rate of the flow of gases during at least a portion of the treatment is less than a second flow rate of the predetermined flow.
