Abstract

An illumination system verifies controls the operation of a luminaire without the use of any photometric data. The illumination system uses data indicative of a current time, date or latitude to determine one or more aspects of a solar event. Such aspects can include a scheduled, predicted or expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event. Responsive to the determination of a scheduled, predicted or expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event, a control subsystem can adjust the luminous output of a light source.

Claims

1. A luminaire, comprising:

at least one light source; and

a control subsystem to control a supply of power to the at least one light source, the control subsystem including;

at least one timing circuit to provide a timing signal;

at least one nontransitory storage media to store geolocation information that specifies at least a position on the Earth at which the luminaire is to operate;

a controller communicably coupled to the at least one timing circuit and the at least one nontransitory storage media, and that;

determines using at least the store geolocation information, at least one aspect of a scheduled solar event at the postion on Earth at which the luminaire is to operate; and

generates at least one output signal having at least one characteristic indicative of the determined at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event; and

at least one power controller conductively coupled to the controller, the at least one power controller selectively operable to control a supply of power to the at least one light source responsive to the at least one characteristic of the at least one output signal.

2. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the timing signal comprises data indicative of at least one of:

a current time and a current date.

3. The luminaire of claim 2 wherein the geolocation information that specifies at least a position on the Earth at which the luminaire is to operate comprises:

a lookup table that includes data indicative of an expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event at the at a position on the Earth at which the luminaire is to operate.

4. The luminaire of claim 3 wherein the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event comprises the expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event as determined by the control subsystem via the lookup table using at least one of:

the current time and the current date.

5. The luminaire of claim 2 wherein the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event comprises an expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event determined by the control subsystem via a calculation using the geolocation information and at least one of:

the local date and the local time.

6. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the at least one aspect of the at least one output signal is indicative of a change in an ambient light intensity associated with the scheduled solar event.

7. The luminaire of claim 6 wherein:

the at least one output signal comprises a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal; and

the at least one characteristic of the at least one output signal comprises at least one of;

a frequency of the PWM signal or a pulse width of the PWM signal;

at least one of the frequency of the PWM signal or the pulse width of the PWM signal varied to adjust the luminous output of the light source.

8. The luminaire of claim 7 wherein the power controller includes at least one solid state switch and the at least one light source comprises a solid state light source.

9. The luminaire of claim 1, wherein:

the at least one scheduled solar event comprises at least one of;

a sunset event or a sunrise event; and

the at least one aspect of the at least one output signal causes at least one of;

an increase or a decrease in the luminous output of the light source.

10. The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the control subsystem further includes at least one communications interface to communicate with at least one of:

an external optical device, an external radio frequency device, a wired network, a wireless network, a cellular network, a global positioning network, and a communications interface in another luminaire.

11. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the at least one timing circuit comprises at least one of:

real-time clock circuit and a timer circuit.

12. The luminaire of claim 11 wherein the timing circuit includes a conductively coupled persistent power source.

13. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event comprises at least one of:

a time of a sunset event;

a time of a sunrise event;

a time of a dusk event;

a time of a dawn event;

a time of a solar noon event; and

a time of a solar midnight event.

14. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the geolocation information identifies a position on the Earth using only a latitude.

15. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the geolocation information identifies a position on the Earth using a latitude and a longitude.

16. A method of controlling the operation of at least one solid state light source, the method comprising:

determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium, the geolocation information specifying at least a position on the Earth at which the solid state light source is to operate, without any reference to photometric sensing;

generating at least one output signal having at least one characteristic indicative of the occurrence of at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event; and

adjusting a luminous output of the at least one solid state light source responsive to the at least one characteristic of the at least one output signal.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium comprises:

determining a time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event by selecting data indicative of the time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event from at least one lookup table, the at least one lookup table including at least data indicative of the expected time of occurrence of the scheduled solar event at the position on the Earth at which the at least one solid state light source operates.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium comprises:

calculating a time of the occurrence of the scheduled solar event based on the position on the Earth at which the at least one solid state light source operates and at least one of;

a current time and a current date.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein generating the at least one output signal comprises:

varying at least one of;

a voltage, a current, a frequency, and a pulse width of the at least one output signal to adjust the luminous output of the at least one solid state light source.

The method of controlling the luminaire of claim 16 wherein determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium, the geolocation information specifying at least a position on the Earth at which the solid state light source is to operate comprises:

determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium, the geolocation information specifying at least a position on the Earth using only a latitude at which the solid state light source is to operate.

The method of controlling the luminaire of claim 16 wherein determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium, the geolocation information specifying at least a position on the Earth at which the solid state light source is to operate comprises:

determining an occurrence of a scheduled solar event based at least on geolocation information stored in a non-transitory storage medium, the geolocation information specifying at least a position on the Earth using a latitude and a longitude at which the solid state light source is to operate.

22. A luminaire controller, comprising:

a timing circuit including a persistent power source and at least one of a timer circuit and a real time clock, the timing circuit to provide a timing signal including data indicative of at least one of;

a current date and a current time;

an output communicably coupled to at least one power controller, the output to provide at least one output signal having at least one characteristic to the at least one power controller, the at least one characteristic of the at least one output signal adjusted relative to at least one aspect of at least one scheduled solar event; and

at least one non-transitory storage media storing machine executable instructions and geolocation information that specifies a position on the Earth at which the luminaire controller is to operate, wherein the machine executable instructions cause the luminaire controller to;

determine the at least one aspect of the at least one scheduled solar event based at least in part on the geolocation information stored in the at least one non-transitory storage media; and

adjust the at least one characteristic of the at least one output signal relative to the determined at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event.

23. The luminaire controller of claim 22 wherein:

the geolocation information further includes at least one lookup table including data indicative of the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event at the position on the Earth at which the luminaire controller is to operate; and

the controller determines the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event via the at least one lookup table based on at least one of;

the current date and the current time.

24. The luminaire controller of claim 22 wherein the controller determines the at least one aspect of the scheduled solar event via one or more calculations based at least in part on the position on the Earth at which the luminaire controller is to operate and at least one of:

the current date and the current time.

25. The luminaire controller of claim 22 wherein the geolocation information identifies a position on the Earth using only a latitude.

26. The luminaire controller of claim 22 wherein the geolocation information identifies a position on the Earth using a latitude and a longitude.
