Abstract

Includes receiving, from a link partner, a message specifying a link partner receive wake time and resolving to the lesser of the received link partner receive wake time and a local transmit wake time.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a link partner, a first message including a first receive wake time requested by the link partner;

determining a first transmit wake time based on the first receive wake time requested by the link partner in the first message and a local transmit wake time;

after a determination to resume data transmission to the link partner after a temporary halt, delaying transmission of data destined for the link partner based on the determined transmit wake time;

resuming transmission of data to the link partner, and

determining a second transmit wake time based on a second, different receive wake time value in a second message received after the first message;

wherein the first message comprises an LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) message including the first receive wake time of the link partner and wherein the first receive wake time consists of a 2-octet field value.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message further includes a remote transmit wake time of the link partner.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining the first transmit wake time comprises determining the first transmit wake time based on the lesser of the first receive wake time requested by the link partner and the local transmit wake time.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a message to the link partner including a receive wake time requested of the link partner and a transmit wake time.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the determined first transmit wake time and a transmit wake time determined by the link partner are not equal.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising determining the receive wake time included in the message to the link partner based, at least in part, on a wake time of a local PHY.

7. The method of claim 4, further comprising determining the receive wake time included in the message to the link partner based, at least in part, on an amount of local receive buffer.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising causing a lower power state based on an indication of sleep from the link partner.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the lower power state comprises reducing power to a PHY of the link.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the lower power state comprises reducing power to at least one component other than the PHY.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one component comprises at least one of a processor, a chipset, and a storage device.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing multiple transmit wake times associated with multiple links.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the storing comprises storing by a switch of the multiple links.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the delaying transmission comprises retaining data to transmit in a transmit buffer.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining when to initiate transmission of a sleep signal.

16. The method of claim 15,

wherein the determining when to initiate transmission of the sleep signal comprises determining based on an amount of data in a transmit buffer.

17. The method of claim 16,

wherein the determining based on the amount of data in the transmit buffer comprises determining when the transmit buffer is empty.

18. The method of claim 16,

wherein the determining based on the amount of data in the transmit buffer comprises determining based on a comparison of the amount of data in the transmit buffer and a threshold.

19. The method of claim 15,

wherein the determining when to initiate transmission of the sleep signal comprises determining based on an amount of received data.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the determining based on an amount of received data comprises determining when there is no received data.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving Fast Link Pulse signals identifying energy efficient Ethernet capabilities of the link partner.

22. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the local transmit wake time based, at least in part, on a wake time of a local PHY.

23. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the local transmit wake time based, at least in part, on an amount of local transmit buffer.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining the transmit wake time comprises determining by a PHY.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining the transmit wake time comprises determining by a MAC (media access controller).

26. The method of claim 1, further comprising implementing a power saving policy.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising determining the transmit wake time based at least in part on the power saving policy.

28. A device, comprising:

at least one Ethernet MAC (media access controller);

logic constructed to, when in operation;

receive a message specifying a first receive wake time of a link partner;

determine a first transmit wake time based on the first receive wake time of the link partner and a local transmit wake time;

after a determination to resume data transmission to the link partner after a temporary halt, delay transmission of data to the first link partner based on the determined first transmit wake time; and

resume transmission of data;

wherein the message comprises an LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) message including the first receive wake time of the link partner and wherein the first receive wake time consists of a 2-octet field value; and

wherein the logic comprises logic constructed to, when in operation, determine a second transmit wake time based on a second, different receive wake time value received after the first receive wake time.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein the device comprises a network interface controller.

30. The device of claim 29, wherein the network interface controller comprises a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) offload engine.

31. The device of claim 28, wherein the first message further includes a remote transmit wake time of the link partner.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the first receive wake time and the remote transmit wake time each consist of a 2-octet field value.

33. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic comprises logic to determine the first transmit wake time based on the lesser of the first receive wake time requested by the link partner and the local transmit wake time.

34. The device of claim 28, further comprising:

logic to cause transmission of a message to the link partner including a receive wake time requested of the link partner and a transmit wake time.

35. The device of claim 34, wherein the determined first transmit wake time and a transmit wake time determined by the link partner are not equal.

36. The device of claim 34, further comprising logic to determine the requested local receive wake time based, at least in part, on a wake time of a local PHY.

37. The device of claim 34, further comprising logic to determine the requested local receive wake time based, at least in part, on an amount of local receive buffer.

38. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic comprises logic to cause a lower power state based on an indication of sleep from the link partner.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the lower power state comprises reduced power to a PHY of the link.

40. The device of claim 39, wherein the lower power state comprises reduced power to at least one component other than the PHY.

41. The device of claim 40, wherein the at least one component comprises at least one of a processor, a chipset, and a storage device.

42. The device of claim 28, further comprising logic to store multiple transmit wake times associated with multiple links.

43. The device of claim 42, wherein the device comprises a multi-link switch.

44. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic to delay transmission comprises logic to retain data to transmit in a transmit buffer.

45. The device of claim 28, further comprising:

logic to determine when to initiate transmission of a sleep signal.

46. The device of claim 45,

wherein the logic to determine when to initiate transmission of the sleep signal comprises logic to determine based on an amount of data in a transmit buffer.

47. The device of claim 46,

wherein the logic to determine based on the amount of data in the transmit buffer comprises logic to determine when the transmit buffer is empty.

48. The device of claim 46,

wherein the logic to determine based on the amount of data in the transmit buffer comprises logic to determine based on a comparison of the amount of data in the transmit buffer and a threshold.

49. The device of claim 45,

wherein the logic to determine when to initiate transmission of the sleep signal comprises logic to determine based on an amount of received data.

50. The device of claim 49, wherein the logic to determine based on an amount of received data comprises logic to determine when there is no received data.

51. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic comprises logic to receive Fast Link Pulse signals identifying energy efficient Ethernet capabilities of the link partner.

52. The device of claim 28, further comprising logic to determine the local transmit wake time based, at least in part, on a wake time of a local PHY.

53. The device of claim 28, further comprising logic to determine the local transmit wake time based, at least in part, on an amount of local transmit buffer.

54. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic to determine the first transmit wake time comprises logic to determine by a PHY.

55. The device of claim 28, wherein the logic to determine the transmit wake time comprises logic to determine by the Ethernet MAC (media access controller).

56. The device of claim 28, further comprising logic to implement a power saving policy.

57. The device of claim 28, further comprising logic to determine a transmit wake time based at least in part on the power saving policy.

58. The device of claim 28, wherein the device comprises at least one processor coupled to at least one network interface controller, the network interface controller comprising at least one Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller.
