1. A lighting device comprising:

  • a housing configured to be attached to a thoroughfare surface, the housing having a top surface, a proximal face, a distal face, and first and second opposing sidewalls extending between the proximal face and the distal face and extending downwardly from the top surface;

    a first primary optic carried by the housing adjacent the first sidewall to define a first optical chamber wherein the first primary optic is positioned generally facing away from the proximal face and at least one degree away from oncoming traffic; and

    a first light source positioned within the first optical chamber and carried by the housing adjacent the first sidewall;

    wherein the first sidewall tapers in a direction of the distal face; and

    wherein the first primary optic is configured to direct light outward and in a direction of the taper in the first sidewall and generally in a direction of the thoroughfare surface.
