1. A clip applying apparatus comprising:

  • a handle assembly;

    a body portion extending distally from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis, the body portion including a crimping member operably associated with the handle assembly, the crimping member being movable between a retracted position and an advanced position in response to actuation of the handle assembly;

    a jaw mechanism including a stationary jaw and a movable jaw, the movable jaw being supported on the crimping member, the stationary jaw including an anvil jaw that is linear along an entire length of the anvil jaw, the anvil jaw defining a longitudinal axis which forms an angle θ

    of between about 15 degrees and about 75 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body portion; and

    a clip having a pair of spaced apart legs interconnected by a backspan, the clip being supported on the stationary jaw,the movable jaw being movable between a proximal-most position, wherein the stationary jaw and the movable jaw are in an unapproximated position, and a distal-most position, wherein the stationary jaw and the movable jaw are in an approximated position such that the stationary jaw is in contact with the movable jaw and the movable jaw is in contact with the clip along an entire length of one of the pair of spaced legs of the clip to crimp the clip between the stationary jaw and the movable jaw, andwherein upon movement of the movable jaw from the proximal-most position to the distal-most position, the stationary and movable jaws first approximate a tip of each of the pair of spaced legs of the clip, and then approximate the backspan of the clip, one of the pair of spaced apart legs of the clip extending radially outward beyond the body portion and the jaw mechanism when the movable jaw is in the proximal-most position.
