Abstract

A method includes defining an encoding rate for encoding a set of frames of multimedia data over a period of time, encoding the set of frames at a reduced encoding rate over the period of time such that encoding the set of frames at the reduced encoding rate defines one or more null intervals when data associated with the set of frames is not present during the period of time, transmitting the encoded set of frames via a transmitter, and blanking the transmitter during the one or more null intervals.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

defining an encoding rate for encoding a set of frames of digital multimedia data over a period of time;

encoding the set of frames at a reduced encoding rate over the period of time such that encoding the set of frames at the reduced encoding rate defines one or more null intervals when data associated with the set of frames is not present during the period of time, wherein the one or more null intervals are defined to correspond to one or more transmitter quieting intervals during which a transmitter refrains from transmitting any data;

transmitting the encoded set of frames via the transmitter; and

blanking the transmitter during the transmitter quieting intervals corresponding to the one or more null intervals, wherein blanking the transmitter during the one or more null intervals comprises refraining from transmitting data via the transmitter during the one or more null intervals,

wherein the one or more null intervals are not less than six milliseconds to provide a sufficient time for reliable spectrum sensing to be performed.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the set of frames comprise one of:

a set of audio frames,

a set of video frames, and

a combined set of audio frames and video frames.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising inserting non-essential data into an encoding bitstream during the one or more null intervals.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the non-essential data comprises packets of redundant data relative to the set of frames.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the non-essential data comprises null data.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the null data comprises a set of packets having all zeros within packet payloads of the set of packets.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein inserting the non-essential data comprises generating a physical transport stream via a modulator and inserting the non-essential data into the physical transport stream.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

identifying a location of the physical transport stream that includes the non-essential data; and

blanking the transmitter at a time associated with the identified location.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein generating the physical transport stream via the modulator includes multiplexing the non-essential data with the encoded set of frames.

10. The method of claim 3, wherein blanking the transmitter during the one or more null intervals includes blanking the transmitter at times corresponding to at least some of the non-essential data.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

aligning one or more application layer boundaries of an encoded bitstream associated with the set of frames with physical layer boundaries of a physical layer transport stream that includes the set of frames.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more null intervals comprise data fields that immediately precede one or more of the application layer boundaries that are aligned with the physical layer boundaries.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the application layer boundaries comprise frame boundaries within a group of pictures (GOP) and wherein the physical layer boundaries correspond to field syncs of the physical layer transport stream.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

performing a sensing operation while blanking the transmitter during the one or more null intervals.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein performing the sensing operation includes sensing for other wireless signals at one or more frequencies.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein sensing for other wireless signals comprises sensing for a licensed signal at the one or more particular frequencies.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising switching the transmitter to a different frequency upon sensing another wireless signal at the one or more particular frequencies.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising periodically repeating the method in compliance with a wireless communication standard that requires periodic sensing for unlicensed use of the one or more particular frequencies.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising encoding and transmitting the set of frames such that the blanking of the transmitter combined with a latency time associated with decoding and demodulating the set of frames is less than a pre-defined duration associated with real-time multimedia presentation to a user.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the pre-defined duration is less than approximately 100 milliseconds.

21. A device comprising:

a multimedia encoding unit that defines an encoding rate for encoding a set of frames of digital multimedia data over a period of time, and encodes the set of frames at a reduced encoding rate over the period of time such that encoding the set of frames at the reduced encoding rate defines one or more null intervals when data associated with the set of frames is not present during the period of time, wherein the one or more null intervals are defined to correspond to one or more transmitter quieting intervals during which a transmitter refrains from transmitting any data, and

the transmitter that transmits the encoded set of frames and blanks during the transmitter quieting intervals corresponding to the one or more null intervals, wherein to blank during the one or more null intervals, the transmitter refrains from transmitting data via the transmitter during the one or more null intervals,

wherein the one or more null intervals are not less than six milliseconds to provide a sufficient time for reliable spectrum sensing to be performed.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the set of frames comprise one of:

a set of audio frames,

a set of video frames, and

a combined set of audio frames and video frames.

23. The device of claim 21, further comprising a modulator unit that inserts non-essential data into an encoding bitstream during the one or more null intervals.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein the non-essential data comprises packets of redundant data relative to the set of frames.

25. The device of claim 23, wherein the non-essential data comprises null data.

26. The device of claim 25, wherein the null data comprises a set of packets having all zeros within packet payloads of the set of packets.

27. The device of claim 23, wherein the modulator unit generates a physical transport stream, wherein the modulator inserts the non-essential data into the physical transport stream.

28. The device of claim 27, wherein the transmitter unit:

identifies a location of the physical transport stream that includes the non-essential data; and

blanks at a time associated with the identified location.

29. The device of claim 27, in generating the physical transport stream, the modulator unit multiplexes the non-essential data with the encoded set of frames.

30. The device of claim 23, wherein the transmitter unit blanks at times corresponding to at least some of the non-essential data.

31. The device of claim 23, wherein one or more application layer boundaries of an encoded bitstream associated with the set of frames are aligned with physical layer boundaries of a physical layer transport stream that includes the set of frames.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the one or more null intervals comprise data fields that immediately precede one or more of the application layer boundaries that are aligned with the physical layer boundaries.

33. The device of claim 31, wherein the application layer boundaries comprise frame boundaries within a group of pictures (GOP) and wherein the physical layer boundaries correspond to field syncs of the physical layer transport stream.

34. The device of claim 23, further comprising:

a sensor unit that performs a sensing operation the transmitter unit blanks during the one or more null intervals.

35. The device of claim 34, wherein in performing the sensing operation, the sensor unit senses for other wireless signals at one or more particular frequencies.

36. The device of claim 35, wherein the sensor unit senses for a licensed signal at the one or more particular frequencies.

37. The device of claim 35, wherein the transmitter unit switches to a different frequency when the sensor unit senses another wireless signal at the one or more particular frequencies.

38. The device of claim 35, wherein the sensor unit periodically repeats sensing during periodic blanking intervals compliance with a wireless communication standard that requires periodic sensing for unlicensed use of the one or more particular frequencies.

39. The device of claim 21, wherein the multimedia encoding unit and the transmitter unit encode and transmit the set of frames such that the blanking of the transmitter unit combined with a latency time associated with decoding and demodulating the set of frames is less than a pre-defined duration associated with real-time multimedia presentation to a user.

40. The device of claim 39, wherein the pre-defined duration is less than approximately 100 milliseconds.

41. A device comprising:

means for defining an encoding rate for encoding a set of frames of digital multimedia data over a period of time;

means for encoding the set of frames at a reduced encoding rate over the period of time such that encoding the set of frames at the reduced encoding rate defines one or more null intervals when data associated with the set of frames is not present during the period of time, wherein the one or more null intervals are defined to correspond to one or more transmitter quieting intervals during which a transmitter refrains from transmitting any data;

means for transmitting the encoded set of frames via the transmitter; and

means for blanking the means for transmitting during the transmitter quieting intervals corresponding the one or more null intervals, wherein the means for blanking the means for transmitting during the one or more null intervals comprises means for refraining from transmitting data via the transmitter during the one or more null intervals,

wherein the one or more null intervals are not less than six milliseconds to provide a sufficient time for reliable spectrum sensing to be performed.

42. The device of claim 41, further comprising:

means for performing a sensing operation while blanking the means for transmitting during the one or more null intervals.

43. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that upon execution cause one or more processor to:

define an encoding rate for encoding a set of frames of digital multimedia data over a period of time;

encode the set of frames at a reduced encoding rate over the period of time such that encoding the set of frames at the reduced encoding rate defines one or more null intervals when data associated with the set of frames is not present during the period of time, wherein the one or more null intervals are defined to correspond to one or more transmitter quieting intervals during which a transmitter refrains from transmitting any data;

transmit the encoded set of frames via the transmitter; and

blank the transmitter during the transmitter quieting intervals corresponding to the one or more null intervals, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to blank the transmitter during the one or more null intervals further cause the processor to refrain from transmitting data via the transmitter during the one or more null intervals,

wherein the one or more null intervals are not less than six milliseconds to provide a sufficient time for reliable spectrum sensing to be performed.

44. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 43, further comprising instructions that cause a sensor unit to perform a sensing operation while the transmitter blanks.
