Abstract

The present disclosure relates to lighting fixtures for use in a lighting network where the lighting fixtures and other elements are able to communicate with each other via wired or wireless communication techniques. When the lighting network is being formed or modified, a lighting fixture is selected to act as a coordinator for forming the lighting network. For example, a user may employ a commissioning tool to select a particular lighting fixture as the coordinator. The coordinator will send out one or more ‘join my network’ messages toward the other elements of the lighting network. The elements that receive the ‘join my network’ message may respond in order to make the coordinator aware of their presence and join them to a lighting network.

Claims

1. A lighting fixture for use in a lighting network with a plurality of lighting network elements comprising:

a light source;

at least one communication interface; and

circuitry adapted to;

control the light source;

receive a network formation message;

in response to receiving the network formation message, send a join my network message;

receive responses from responding lighting network elements; and

form the lighting network including the responding lighting network elements.

2. The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein the network formation message is received from a handheld commissioning tool.

3. The lighting fixture of claim 2 wherein the network formation message is wirelessly received from the handheld commissioning tool.

The lighting fixture of claim 3 wherein the circuitry is further configured to monitor a signal strength of a signal associated with the network formation message and provided by the handheld commissioning tool, and if the signal strength is above a defined threshold, send the join my network message in response to receiving the network formation message.

5. The lighting fixture of claim 4 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to assign itself as a coordinator for the lighting network when the signal strength of the signal is above the defined threshold.

6. The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to receive requests to join the lighting network from additional lighting elements and add the additional lighting elements to the lighting network.

7. The lighting fixture of claim 6 wherein the lighting network is a mesh network, the responding lighting network elements are routing nodes in the mesh network, and the additional lighting elements are non-routing nodes in the mesh network.

The lighting fixture of claim 7 wherein each of the responding lighting network elements and the additional lighting elements includes a unique MAC address and the circuitry is further adapted to send a unique short address to each of the responding lighting network elements and the additional lighting elements wherein the unique short address is used for normal communications within the lighting network.

The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein each of the responding lighting network elements includes a unique MAC address and the circuitry is further adapted to send a unique short address to each of the responding lighting network elements, wherein the unique short address is used for normal communications within the lighting network.

10. The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein to send the join my network message, the circuitry is further adapted to broadcast the join my network message in a manner capable of being received by at least the responding lighting network elements.

11. The lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to broadcast the join my network message on a plurality of communication channels.

12. The lighting fixture of claim 11 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to identify a select communication channel in the join my network message for the responding lighting network elements to send the responses, and the responses are received via the select communication channel.

13. The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein the network formation message is received from a handheld commissioning tool in response to a user pressing a single button on the handheld commissioning tool.

The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein after elements, including the responding lighting network elements, in the lighting network have joined the lighting network, the circuitry is further adapted to effect delivery of instructions to the elements to initiate a grouping process, wherein the elements coordinate with each other to form a plurality of groups of elements.

15. The lighting fixture of claim 14 wherein the grouping process employs a lightcasting process, wherein as one element emits a lightcast signal, other ones of the elements monitor the lightcast signal to determine lightcast data that is used to determine the plurality of groups of elements.

16. The lighting fixture of claim 15 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to collect the lightcast data from the other ones of the elements.

17. The lighting fixture of claim 16 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to send to the other ones of the elements information that identifies a group to which each of the other ones of the elements is assigned.

18. The lighting fixture of claim 17 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to determine the information that identifies the group based on the lightcast data.

19. The lighting fixture of claim 17 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to send the lightcast data to a remote device, which will provide the information that identifies the group based on the lightcast data.

20. The lighting fixture of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further adapted to:

receive remote sensor data from at least one other lighting fixture; and

drive the light source based on the remote sensor data.

21. The lighting fixture of claim 20 further comprising a local sensor and wherein:

the circuitry is further adapted to determine local sensor data from the local sensor; and

the light source is driven by the circuitry based on both the remote sensor data and the local sensor data.

22. The lighting fixture of claim 20 further comprising a local sensor and wherein:

the circuitry is further adapted to;

determine local sensor data from the local sensor; and

send the local sensor data to the at least one other lighting fixture.

23. The lighting fixture of claim 20 wherein:

the circuitry is further adapted to receive an instruction from a remote entity; and

the light source is driven by the circuitry based on both the remote sensor data and the instruction.

24. The lighting fixture of claim 23 further comprising a local sensor and wherein:

the circuitry is further adapted to determine local sensor data from the local sensor; and

the light source is driven by the circuitry based on the remote sensor data, the local sensor data, and the instruction.

25. The lighting fixture of claim 20 wherein the light source is a solid-state light source.

26. A method for operating a lighting fixture for use in a lighting network with a plurality of lighting network elements comprising:

controlling a light source;

receiving a network formation message;

in response to receiving the network formation message, sending a join my network message;

receiving responses from responding lighting network elements; and

forming the lighting network including the responding lighting network elements.

The method of claim 26 further comprising monitoring a signal strength of a signal associated with the network formation message and provided by a handheld commissioning tool, and if the signal strength is above a defined threshold, send the join my network message in response to receiving the network formation message.

28. The method of claim 27 further comprising assigning itself as a coordinator for the lighting network when the signal strength of the signal is above the defined threshold.

29. The method of claim 26 further comprising receiving requests to join the lighting network from additional lighting elements and adding the additional lighting elements to the lighting network.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein the lighting network is a mesh network, the responding lighting network elements are routing nodes in the mesh network, and the additional lighting elements are non-routing nodes in the mesh network.
