1. An exterior mirror system for a vehicle, said exterior mirror system comprising:

  • an exterior mirror assembly having a turn signal indicator;

    said turn signal indicator comprising at least one light emitting diode, said at least one light emitting diode emitting an intensity of light when electrically operated;

    said turn signal indicator comprising a light guiding element that guides light emitted by said at least one light emitting diode;

    said light guiding element comprising at least one faceted surface;

    wherein, during low ambient lighting conditions at night, the intensity of light emitted by said at least one light emitting diode of said turn signal indicator is reduced under photosensor control to a nighttime intensity level;

    wherein said nighttime intensity level is greater than about 0.3 candela and is less than about 200 candelas; and

    wherein light emitted by said at least one light emitting diode passes through said light guiding element to produce a turn signal indicator light pattern of said turn signal indicator for a given intensity of light emitted by said light emitting diode, and wherein a first region of the turn signal indicator light pattern produced by passage of emitted light through said light guiding element is forward of said exterior mirror assembly and has a first intensity and wherein a second region of the turn signal indicator light pattern produced by passage of emitted light through said light guiding element is rearward of said exterior mirror assembly and has a second light intensity and wherein a third region of the turn signal indicator light pattern produced by passage of emitted light through said light guiding element is between said first and second regions and has a third light intensity, and wherein said third light intensity is greater than said first and second light intensities.
