1. An access device for placing a medical article within a body space, comprising:

  • a needle section comprising an elongated needle body, a sharp distal tip, a side opening, and a first locking structure, the side opening in communication with an interior of the needle section such that a body fluid can flow through from the distal tip through the side opening, and the first locking structure being disposed proximal of the side opening; and

    a medical article section coaxially disposed and slideable over the needle body, the medical article section comprising a tubular portion and a second locking structure,wherein the first locking structure and the second locking structure form a locking apparatus configured to move into a locked position from an unlocked position to arrest axial movement of the needle body at least in the distal direction once the distal tip of the needle body is drawn into the medical article section to protect the distal tip.
