an outer gantry that is movable around the patent support, the particle accelerator being mounted on the outer gantry and outputting a proton or ion beam; and
an inner gantry comprising a track and an applicator mounted to the track, the applicator comprising an aperture for directing the proton or ion beam towards a target in the patient, the gantry being configured to move the applicator along the track through a range of positions around the patient so as to position the proton or ion beam at sub-millimeter precision.
