Abstract

A system includes a patient support and an outer gantry on which an accelerator is mounted to enable the accelerator to move through a range of positions around a patient on the patient support. The accelerator is configured to produce a proton or ion beam having an energy level sufficient to reach a target in the patient. An inner gantry includes an aperture for directing the proton or ion beam towards the target.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

a patient support for holding a patient;

a particle accelerator;

an outer gantry that is movable around the patent support, the particle accelerator being mounted on the outer gantry and outputting a proton or ion beam; and

an inner gantry comprising a track and an applicator mounted to the track, the applicator comprising an aperture for directing the proton or ion beam towards a target in the patient, the gantry being configured to move the applicator along the track through a range of positions around the patient so as to position the proton or ion beam at sub-millimeter precision.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the applicator is configured to move the aperture towards, or away from, the patient.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the inner gantry comprises a track along which the applicator is configured to move.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the inner gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in a continuous manner.

5. The system of claim 3, wherein the inner gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in discrete movements.

6. The system of claim 3, wherein the inner gantry comprises a cover that is movable relative to the track, the cover for covering an opening in a vault to prevent objects from falling into the vault below the patient support.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a processing device programmed to control movement of the outer gantry and the inner gantry.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the processing device is configured to control movement of the outer gantry and the inner gantry to substantially align the proton or ion beam with the aperture.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the aperture is configured to substantially collimate the proton or ion beam.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the patient support is movable relative to the inner gantry and the outer gantry.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the track comprises a rail;

and

wherein the applicator comprises;

an extension drive to move the aperture towards, or away from, a patient on the patient support; and

a theta drive to move the applicator along different positions of the rail.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the aperture is configured to change a cross-sectional shape of the particle beam.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the applicator comprises a multi-leaf collimator configured to size and/or to shape the particle beam or to allow the particle beam to pass without alteration.

14. A system comprising:

a synchrocyclotron to produce a proton or ion beam using a particle source that is interrupted, the particle source comprising a tube containing plasma from which particles for the proton or ion beam are extracted, the tube being interrupted such that all of the tube is removed at an acceleration region where the particles are extracted from the plasma;

a first gantry on which an synchrocyclotron is mounted to enable the synchrocyclotron to move through a range of positions around a patient, the range of positions defining a volume, the first gantry being movable at a first precision; and

a second gantry configured to move an apparatus around the patient within the volume, the apparatus being configured to pass the particle beam to the patient, the apparatus being movable at a second precision that is more precise than the first precision.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the apparatus comprises an applicator and an aperture, the applicator being configured to move the aperture towards, or away from, the patient.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the second gantry comprises a track along which the applicator is configured to move.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the second gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in a continuous manner.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the second gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in discrete movements.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the second gantry comprises a cover that is movable relative to the track, the cover for covering an opening in a vault through which the first gantry passes to prevent objects from falling into the vault below the patient support.

20. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a processing device programmed to control movement of the first gantry and the second gantry.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the apparatus comprises an applicator and an aperture, the applicator being configured to move the aperture towards, or away from, the patient;

and

wherein the processing device is configured to control movement of the first gantry and the second gantry to substantially align the proton or ion beam with the aperture.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the aperture is configured to substantially collimate the proton or ion beam.

23. The system of claim 14, further comprising a patient support for holding the patient, the patient support being movable relative to the first gantry and the second gantry.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the apparatus comprises an applicator and an aperture, the applicator being configured to move the aperture towards, or away from, the patient;

wherein the second gantry comprises a track; and

wherein the applicator comprises;

an extension drive to move the aperture towards, or away from, a patient on the patient support; and

a theta drive to move the applicator along different positions of the track.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the aperture is configured to change a cross-sectional shape of the particle beam.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the applicator comprises a multi-leaf collimator configured to size and/or to shape the particle beam or to allow the particle beam to pass without alteration.

27. A system comprising:

a patient support for holding a patient; and

a gantry comprising a C-shaped track and an applicator mounted to the C-shaped track, the applicator comprising an aperture to pass a proton or ion beam to a target in the patient, the gantry being configured to move the applicator along the C-shaped track through a range of positions around the patient, including above and below the patient, and to position the proton or ion beam at sub-millimeter precision.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the gantry comprises an inner gantry;

and

wherein the system further comprises;

a particle accelerator to generate the proton or ion beam; and

an outer gantry holding the particle accelerator, the outer gantry being configured to position the proton or ion beam at millimeter-level precision or greater than millimeter-level precision.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the applicator is configured to move the aperture towards, or away from, the patient.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein the inner gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in a continuous manner.

31. The system of claim 28, wherein the inner gantry is configured to move the applicator along the track in discrete movements.

32. The system of claim 28, wherein the inner gantry comprises a cover that is movable relative to the track, the cover for covering an opening in a vault to prevent objects from falling into the vault below the patient support.

33. The system of claim 28, further comprising:

a processing device programmed to control movement of the outer gantry and the inner gantry.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the processing device is configured to control movement of the outer gantry and the inner gantry to substantially align the proton or ion beam with the aperture.

35. The system of claim 27, wherein the aperture is configured to substantially collimate the proton or ion beam.

36. The system of claim 27, wherein the patient support is movable relative to the gantry, movement of the patient support being computer -controlled.

37. The system of claim 27, wherein the applicator comprises:

an extension drive to move the aperture towards, or away from, a patient on the patient support; and

a theta drive to move the applicator along different positions of the gantry.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein the aperture is configured to change a cross-sectional shape of the particle beam.
