Implantable fastener cartridge comprising multiple layers

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:
- a plurality of staples, wherein each said staple comprises a base and a deformable member extending from said base, and wherein each said deformable member comprises a tip;
an implantable staple cartridge body, comprising;
a first compressible layer comprised of a first material, wherein said bases are embedded in said first compressible layer;
a second compressible layer comprised of a second material, wherein said tips are embedded in said second compressible layer, wherein said first compressible layer comprises a first stiffness, wherein said second compressible layer comprises a second stiffness, and wherein said first stiffness is different than said second stiffness; and
a wrap surrounding said first compressible layer and said second compressible layer, wherein said tips are configured to incise said wrap when said implantable staple cartridge body is compressed by an anvil.

Abstract
A fastener cartridge can comprise a compressible, collapsible, and/or crushable cartridge body and fasteners embedded within the cartridge body which can be utilized to fasten tissue. In use, the fastener cartridge can be positioned in a first jaw of a surgical fastening device, wherein the first jaw can be positioned opposite a second jaw, or anvil. The anvil can be engaged with the fastener cartridge to compress, collapse, and/or crush the cartridge body and deform, or otherwise deploy, the fasteners contained therein. As the fasteners are deformed or deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the cartridge body therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened. In various embodiments, the cartridge body can comprise a plurality of layers comprised of different materials which can apply pressure to the tissue. These different materials can have different stiffnesses and/or spring rates.

a plurality of undeformed staples; and an implantable staple cartridge body comprising a plurality of layers, wherein said plurality of layers forms a unitary implantable piece, and wherein said plurality of layers comprises; a first compressible layer comprised of a first material, wherein said undeformed staples are embedded in said first compressible layer; and a second compressible layer comprised of a second material, wherein said first compressible layer comprises a first stiffness, wherein said second compressible layer comprises a second stiffness, and wherein said first stiffness is different than said second stiffness; wherein said plurality of staples are arranged in a first inner staple row, a first outer staple row, a second inner staple row, and a second outer staple row, wherein said first compressible layer is thicker along said first inner staple row and said second inner staple row than said first outer staple row and said second outer staple row.

a plurality of fasteners, wherein said plurality of fasteners are arranged in a first inner fastener row, a first outer fastener row, a second inner fastener row, and a second outer fastener row; and an implantable cartridge body, comprising; a first compressible laminate comprised of a first material, wherein said fasteners are embedded in said first compressible laminate; and a second compressible laminate comprised of a second material, wherein said first compressible laminate comprises a first stiffness, wherein said second compressible laminate comprises a second stiffness, wherein said first stiffness is different than said second stiffness, wherein said second stiffness is higher along said first inner fastener row and said second inner fastener row than said first outer fastener row and said second outer fastener row, and wherein said first compressible laminate is thicker along said first inner fastener row and said second inner fastener row than said first outer fastener row and said second outer fastener row.

a plurality of undeformed staples arranged in a plurality of longitudinal rows, wherein said plurality of longitudinal rows comprises a first longitudinal row and a second longitudinal row; and an implantable staple cartridge body having a collapsible cellular structure, wherein said implantable staple cartridge body comprises a plurality of compressible portions forming a unitary implantable piece, and wherein said plurality of compressible portions comprises; a first portion aligned with said first longitudinal row and offset from said second longitudinal row, wherein said first portion comprises a first stiffness; and a second portion aligned with said second longitudinal row and offset from said first longitudinal row, wherein said second portion comprises a second stiffness which is different than said first stiffness.
