Abstract

A measuring device is used in conjunction with a programmable controller for monitoring electrolyte levels in the battery. According to one implementation, the measuring device is located in a battery and is configured to detect when the electrolyte level in the battery falls below a particular level. The controller is in electrical communication with the electrolyte detection device. The controller is configured to: (i) receive a signal from the electrolyte level detection device indicating when the electrolyte level in the battery has fallen below the particular level; (ii) introduce a wait-period after the signal is received; and (iii) enable an indicator to indicate that the electrolyte level in the battery should be refilled when the wait-period expires.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring an electrolyte level in a battery having plates immersed within the electrolyte, said method comprising:

(a) detecting when the electrolyte level in the battery has fallen below a first level due to a loss of electrolyte, said first level being above a second level which is the lowest safe level of electrolyte for the battery;

(b) introducing a wait-period after satisfaction of step (a), said wait period providing an amount of time for the electrolyte to fall further below said first level but not fall below said second level; and

(c) providing an indication after the wait-period expires.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a first indication is provided after satisfaction of step (a), and the indication of step (c) is a second indication.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said first indication is different than said second indication.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said first and second indications comprise a light, and said first indication is a different color light than said second indication.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said second level is at a top of the plates.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the wait-period by counting down a programmable-countdown-time after the electrolyte level in the battery falls below the first level.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of determining the wait-period by monitoring the number of charging cycles the battery experiences after the electrolyte level in the battery falls below the first level.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said wait period is at least about 2 hours.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said wait period is at least about 1 day.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said wait period is within a range of about 1 to about 50 days.

11. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

(b)(i) detecting whether the electrolyte level in the battery rises above the first level during the wait-period; and

(b)(ii) resetting the wait-period if the electrolyte level in the battery rises above the first level during the wait-period.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication of step (c) is carried out by turning off a light that was illuminated prior to step (c).

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication of step (c) is carried out by turning on a light that was off prior to step (c).

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of illuminating a light of a first color prior to step (c), and wherein the indication of step (c) is carried out by illuminating a light different in color than that of said first color.

20. A battery cell, comprising:

a housing;

a liquid electrolyte within said housing;

positive and negative plates within said housing in contact with said electrolyte;

a first electrolyte level within said housing, said first electrolyte level being above a second electrolyte level which is the lowest safe level of electrolyte for the battery cell; and

an apparatus for monitoring electrolyte level in said battery cell, said apparatus configured to carry out the method set forth in claim 1.

21. The battery cell of claim 20, wherein said wait period is within a range of about 1 to about 50 days.

15. An apparatus for monitoring an electrolyte level in a battery cell, comprising:

an electrolyte detection member positionable in the cell and configured to detect when the electrolyte level in the cell falls below a first level, said first level being above a second level which is the lowest safe level of electrolyte for the cell;

a controller, coupled to the electrolyte detection member, configured to (i) introduce a first wait-period when the electrolyte level in the battery is detected to have fallen below the first level, said wait period providing time for the electrolyte to fall further below said first level but not fall below said second level; and

(ii) provide an indication after the wait-period expires; and

an indicator in communication with said controller to be enabled thereby.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein said electrolyte detection member comprises a probe having a tip configured to be submerged into the electrolyte.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said indicator comprises a light.

18. The apparatus as recited in claim 15, wherein said wait period is at least about 1 day.

19. A battery cell, comprising:

a housing;

a liquid electrolyte within said housing;

positive and negative plates within said housing in contact with said electrolyte;

a first electrolyte level within said housing, said first electrolyte level being above a second electrolyte level which is the lowest safe level of electrolyte for the battery cell; and

an apparatus for monitoring electrolyte level in said battery cell in accordance with claim 15, said electrolyte detection member being positioned to be in contact with said electrolyte within said housing.

22. A method of monitoring an electrolyte level in a battery cell having plates immersed within an electrolyte, said method comprising:

(a) detecting when the electrolyte level in the battery cell has fallen below a first level due to a loss of the electrolyte, said first level being above a second level which is the lowest safe level of electrolyte for the battery cell;

(b) initiating a wait-period after satisfaction of step (a), said wait-period comprising at least about 1 hour; and

(c) providing an indication after the wait-period expires.

23. The method as recited in claim 22, wherein said wait period is within a range of about 1 to about 50 days.

24. An apparatus for carrying out the method set forth in claim 22, said apparatus comprising:

an electrolyte detection device positionable in the cell for carrying out step (a) of claim 22; and

a controller, in electrical communication with said electrolyte detection device, configured to carry out step (b) of claim 22.
