1. A computer-implemented method for characteristic-based item selection in a networked computing environment, comprising:

  • populating at least one computer storage device with a first set of items, the first set of items being a plurality of user items that are associated in the at least one computer storage device with a first set of corresponding characteristics;

    generating, for each item in the first set of items, a compatibility score with respect to each other item in the first set of items, each compatibility score including a numerical representation of a compatibility of a first user item with a second user item;

    generating a first computer data structure of the first set of items having the compatibility scores of the first set of items to one another;

    receiving, in the at least one computer storage device, a second set of items that correspond to the first set of items, the second set of items being a plurality of retailer items that are accompanied by a second set of corresponding characteristics;

    generating, for each item in the second set of items, a compatibility score with respect to each other item in the second set of items, each compatibility score including a numerical representation of a compatibility of a first retailer item with a second retailer item;

    generating a second computer data structure of the second set of items having the compatibility scores of the second set of items to one another;

    merging the first computer data structure with the second computer data structure to yield a merged table; and

    generating a set of matches between the first set of items and the second set of items based on the merged table.
