Abstract

The digital 3D/360° camera system is an omnidirectional stereoscopic device for capturing image data that may be used to create a 3-dimensional model for presenting a 3D image, a 3D movie, or 3D animation. The device uses multiple digital cameras, arranged with overlapping fields of view, to capture image data covering an entire 360° scene. The data collected by one, or several, digital 3D/360° camera systems can be used to create a 3D model of a 360° scene by using triangulation of the image data within the overlapping fields of view.

Claims

1. A digital camera system comprising:

a camera housing;

a plurality of digital cameras having overlapping fields of view rigidly mounted within the camera housing;

a mass storage device storing image data; and

a controller in communication with the plurality of digital cameras and the mass storage device, the controller configured to cause the plurality of digital cameras to simultaneously capture images, to generate at least one pixel vector map indicating at least geospatial relationships among the plurality of digital cameras, and to store image data associated with the images and pixel vector map in the mass storage device.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an external communication interface for communicating with a second system; and

wherein the controller is further configured to transmit the image data to the second system via the external communication interface.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the controller is further configured to receive, via the external communication interface, commands from the second system for operating the system.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the second system is a mobile device.

5. The system of claim 3, wherein the controller is further configured to communicate wirelessly with the second system via the external communication interface.

The system of claim 1, wherein the camera housing is shaped to allow a first and a second stereoscopic pair of digital cameras from among the plurality of digital cameras to substantially share a field of view, the first pair of digital cameras being spaced apart at a distance different than a spacing of the second pair of digital cameras.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the camera housing is spherical.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the camera housing is rectangular.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a location and orientation sensor.

10. The system of claim 9, the location and orientation sensor comprise at least one of a global positioning system or digital compass.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the mounting of the plurality of digital cameras within the housing is arranged to a precise geometry.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the precise geometry of the plurality of digital cameras is set to provide a stereoscopic three-hundred-sixty degree view of the area surrounding the plurality of digital cameras.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of digital cameras is configured to capture still images, and the controller is further configured to generate a three-hundred-sixty degree, three dimensional digital still image of the area surrounding the plurality of digital cameras based at least on the stored image data.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of digital cameras is configured to capture video images, and the controller is further configured to generate a three-hundred-sixty, three dimensional degree digital video of the area surrounding the plurality of digital cameras based at least on the stored image data.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one pixel vector map comprises a plurality of pixel maps, each pixel map from the plurality of pixel maps corresponding to a separate camera from among the plurality of digital cameras.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the plurality of pixel maps indicate reference points for each separate camera from among the plurality of digital cameras.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the reference points define optical centers for each separate camera from among the plurality of digital cameras.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the plurality of pixel maps include directional vectors.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the controller is further configured to generate a three-hundred-sixty degree, three dimensional digital image of the area surrounding the plurality of digital cameras based at least on the based on the reference points and directional vectors.
