Abstract

An example includes apparatus including a non-thin-film battery, that can include an implantable housing, electronics disposed in the implantable housing, and a battery disposed in the implantable housing, the battery comprising: a plurality of cells electrically connected to one another, with at least one cell including a stack including at least one substantially planar anode having a thickness greater than 1 micrometer and at least one substantially planar cathode having a thickness greater than 1 micrometer, and a cell housing enclosing the stack of substantially planar anodes and cathodes and displacing less than approximately 0.024 cubic centimeters, wherein the plurality of cells are interconnected in at least one of series and parallel, and terminals interconnecting the battery and the electronics.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

an implantable housing having an exterior shaped using modeled fluid dynamics;

electronics disposed in the implantable housing;

a battery disposed in the implantable housing, the battery comprising;

at least two cells electrically connected to one another in series, the battery housing having a contoured exterior that approximately conforms to the exterior shape of the implantable housing; and

terminals interconnecting the battery and the electronics.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the implantable housing has a cylindrical cross section, and the battery and electronics are disposed along a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery is a primary battery.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery is adapted to provide approximately 33 milliamp-hours per month.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery includes at least one substantially planar cathode including compressed powder.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electronics include a sensor.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the sensor includes a pressure sensor.

8. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the electronics includes sensor circuitry and stimulation circuitry.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the exterior of the implantable housing was modeled using fluid dynamics.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery is a secondary battery.

11. A method for construction an implantable device, comprising:

shaping an exterior of a housing of the implantable device, including modeling the exterior;

stacking at least one anode with at least one cathode into a stack defining a first cell;

stacking at least one anode with at least one cathode to into a stack defining a second cell;

disposing the stacks into a cell housing, the cell housing providing a form shaped to fit an interior of the housing of the implantable device; and

electrically connecting the first cell to the second cell in a series connection.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising hermetically sealing the cell housing and electronics into the housing of the implantable device.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising modeling the exterior of the housing of the implantable device to reduce turbulence.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising modeling the exterior of the housing of the implantable device to reduce stagnation.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising modeling the exterior of the housing of the implantable device to reduce fluid sheer stress.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

an implantable device housing;

electronics disposed in the implantable device housing;

a battery disposed in the implantable device housing wherein a first terminal and a second terminal interconnect the battery and the electronics, the battery comprising;

a plurality of cells electrically interconnected to one another in series, with at least one cell comprising;

a stack of at least one substantially planar anode and at least one substantially planar cathode; and

a cell housing enclosing the stack and conforming an exterior shape of the implantable housing.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the at least one substantially planar anode and the at least one substantially planar cathode are annular and concentric.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the electronics include neurostimulation electronics.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the electronics include a wireless transmitter.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the at least one substantially planar cathode includes a pellet of cathode, and the at least one substantially planar anode includes a pellet of anode.
