1. A system for detecting and communicating the position of a pusher assembly on a shelf, comprising:
- a rear reflector strip positioned behind the pusher assembly;
a control module with a microcomputer; and
a laser assembly comprising a laser scanner, the laser assembly in communication with the control module, wherein the laser scanner is configured to transmit an output beam directed along the length of the rear reflector strip to a mirrored reflective surface located along the length of the rear reflector strip,wherein the laser scanner is configured to transmit the output beam to a rotating mirror located within or associated with the laser scanner wherein the rotating mirror directs the output beam to the mirrored reflective surface at various angles, thereby creating a swept laser beam, wherein the swept laser beam includes various output beams at various angles and the swept laser beam is directed to a segmented mirrored reflective surface located along the length of the rear reflector strip, wherein the segmented mirrored reflective surface comprises a plurality of angled mirror sections that are configured to reflect a portion of the swept laser beam to the pusher assembly and a plurality of flat sections located at the leading edge of each angled mirror section that are configured to retro-reflect the portion of the swept laser beam back to the laser scanner, and further wherein the microcomputer analyzes the portion of the swept laser beam at the laser scanner and the angular location of the rotating mirror to detect the position of the pusher assembly on the shelf.

Abstract
The present invention relates to a system for detecting and communicating the position of a pusher assembly on a shelf. In an embodiment, a system includes a control module, a pusher assembly, and a laser scanner. The laser scanner is configured to transmit a swept beam to a mirrored reflective surface located behind the pusher assembly. The control module analyzes the laser beam at the laser scanner to detect the position of the pusher assembly on the shelf. In another embodiment, a system includes a control module, a pusher assembly, and an infrared transceiver that sends and receives infrared signals. The transceiver may be located behind the pusher assembly. The control module analyzes the infrared signals to determine the position of the pusher assembly on the shelf.
