1. A device for generating nitric oxide from nitrogen dioxide, comprising:

  • a receptacle including an inlet, an outlet and a diverter,a porous solid matrix including an antioxidant positioned within the receptacle, anda space between the receptacle and the porous solid matrix,wherein the space has a width, which is the distance between an outer surface of the porous solid matrix to the receptacle, and the width of the space is variable along a length of the receptacle, andwherein the inlet is configured to receive a gas flow, the diverter directs the gas flow to the space between the receptacle and the porous solid matrix, and the gas flow is fluidly communicated to the outlet through the porous solid matrix to convert nitrogen dioxide in the gas flow into nitric oxide.
