1. A gaming system that provides game play in exchange for monetary input per game played, the gaming system comprising:

  • a gaming network;

    a plurality of game servers connected to each other via the network;

    a plurality of game units connected to at least one game server via the network, wherein the plurality of game servers are separate from the plurality of game units, wherein each server enables periodic update signals to be sent to the remaining servers, and wherein each game unit enables a new player to view a list of displayed players that are currently playing on game units that are linked to the game unit being viewed by the new player; and

    a progressive tournament controller, wherein the progressive tournament controller manages a tournament prize value that employs time-based incrementing; and

    wherein the tournament prize is incremented over time at time intervals of random length that are unrelated to monetary input or game play.
