First Claim
1. A wireless handheld or portable device capable of multiband MIMO operation comprising a MIMO system comprising:
- at least two radiating systems capable of transmitting and receiving electromagnetic wave signals; and
a MIMO module configured to process the electromagnetic wave signals transmitted and received by the at least two radiating systems, the MIMO module including at least two MIMO internal ports, wherein;
at least two of the radiating systems are capable of transmitting and receiving electromagnetic wave signals in at least a first frequency band;
at least two of the radiating systems are capable of transmitting and receiving electromagnetic wave signals in at least a second frequency band;
each of the radiating systems comprises at least one external port connected to a respective one of the MIMO internal ports; and
at least one of the radiating systems includes a radiating structure comprises;
a ground plane having a maximum length larger than 0.1λ and
smaller than 1.5λ
, where λ
is the wavelength at a frequency within the first frequency band of operation, the first frequency band of operation being lower than the second frequency band of operation, the ground plane including a connection point;
a radiation booster configured to couple electromagnetic energy from/to the ground plane, the radiation booster including a connection point;
an internal port defined between the connection point of the radiation booster and the connection point of the ground plane; and
a radiofrequency system comprising a port connected to a corresponding external port of the radiating system and a port connected to the internal port of the radiating structure, wherein;
an input impedance of the radiating structure measured at its internal port when disconnected from the radiofrequency system has an non-zero imaginary part for any frequency of frequency bands of operation associated with the internal port;
the radiofrequency system is configured to modify the impedance of the radiating structure to provide operation in the frequency bands associated with the internal port; and
an imaginary area enclosing the radiation booster has a maximum size of less than 1/30 of the free-space operating wavelength at a lowest frequency band of operation associated with the internal port.

The MIMO system further comprises a MIMO module arranged for processing the electromagnetic wave signals. a first radiating system configured to operate in at least two frequency bands; a second radiating system configured to operate in at least one frequency band in common with a frequency band of the first radiating system; a ground plane common to the first and second radiating systems; the second radiating system comprising a radiation booster acting in cooperation with the ground plane; and the radiation booster is shaped to be completely enclosed in an imaginary area having a maximum size of less than 1/30 of the free-space operating wavelength at the lowest frequency band of operation of the second radiating system.

a first radiating system configured to operate in at least two frequency bands; a second radiating system configured to operate in at least two frequency bands; a ground plane common to the first and second radiating systems; a slot in the ground plane configured to improve isolation between the first and second radiating systems; the first and second radiating systems having at least two operating frequency bands in common; the first radiating system comprising a radiation booster acting in cooperation with the ground plane; and the radiation booster being shaped to be completely enclose in an imaginary area having a maximum size of less than 1/30 of the free-space operating wavelength of the lowest frequency band of operation of the first radiating system.
