Abstract

A system and method for efficiently communicating messages over a low-rate channel between multiple devices in a system for wireless communication of uncompressed video is disclosed. The method includes various control bits in a beacon control field of a beacon frame to improve the efficiency of the beacon processing, thereby reducing beacon processing time and size of the beacon frame itself. The transmitting device can use one or more of the various control bits to indicate whether there are changes in various MAC payload information fields. The receiving station can use one or more of the control bits to eliminate the need to parse one or more MAC payload information fields whose values have not changed from the previous beacon frame.

Claims

1. A system for wireless communication of uncompressed video, comprising:

a memory in a transmitting station, the memory configured to store a current beacon frame having a beacon control field, wherein the beacon control field includes one or more control bits, and wherein at least one control bit comprises a configuration change bit and another control bit indicates whether there is still channel time available to accept a new bandwidth reservation request or allow devices to contend a channel at unreserved channel time blocks;

a processor configured to set the one or more control bits in the beacon control field; and

a transmitter to wirelessly transmit the current beacon frame, wherein received information elements (IEs) are selectively parsed based on a setting of the one or more control bits, and at least one field of the current beacon frame is parsed.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the received information elements (IEs) are selectively parsed based on a setting of the configuration change bit that indicates a change in the number of fields of the current beacon frame as compared to a previous beacon frame.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the control bits indicates an inclusion of a particular type of information elements in the current beacon frame.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the control bits indicates a configuration change in the current beacon frame.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the control bits indicates a channel time scheduling change in the current beacon frame.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the information elements include schedule information elements.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the schedule information elements include static or dynamic schedule information elements.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein one of the control bits indicates an inclusion of static schedule informational elements in the current beacon frame.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the control bits indicates whether a coordinator is busy.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the control bits indicates the beacon frame being sent by a non-coordinator.

11. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a receiver that parses particular fields of the current beacon frame based on settings of multiple control bits without parsing fields that have unchanged information in the current beacon frame as compared to a previous beacon frame.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein a size of the current beacon frame is reduced by eliminating unchanged IEs based on the settings of the multiple control bits.

13. A method of wireless communication of uncompressed video, comprising:

maintaining a current beacon frame having a beacon control field in a memory of a transmitting wireless station, wherein the beacon control field includes one or more control bits, and wherein at least one control bit comprises a configuration change bit and another control bit indicates whether there is still channel time available to accept a new bandwidth reservation request or allow devices to contend a channel at unreserved channel time blocks;

setting the at least one or more control bits in the beacon control field; and

wirelessly transmitting the current beacon frame, wherein received information elements (IEs) are selectively parsed based on a setting of the at least one or more control bits, and at least one field of the current beacon frame is parsed.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the current beacon frame resides at the start of a current superframe comprising information elements and said current beacon frame;

wirelessly transmitting comprises wirelessly transmitting the current superframe; and

the method further comprising, at a receiving wireless station, selectively parsing the received information elements based on a setting of at least one control bit.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the received information elements (IEs) are selectively parsed based on a setting of the configuration change bit that indicates a change in the number of fields of the current beacon frame as compared to a previous beacon frame.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein one of the control bits indicates an inclusion of a particular type of information elements in the current beacon frame.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein one of the control bits indicates a configuration change in the current beacon frame.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein one of the control bits indicates a channel time scheduling change in the current beacon frame.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the information elements include schedule information elements.

20. A method of wireless communication of uncompressed video, comprising:

wirelessly receiving a superframe at a receiving wireless station, wherein the superframe includes information elements and a current beacon frame having a beacon control field including one or more control bits, and wherein at least one control bit comprises a configuration change bit and another control bit indicates whether there is still channel time available to accept a new bandwidth reservation request or allow devices to contend a channel at unreserved channel time blocks; and

selectively processing one or more of the information elements based on a setting of the at least one or more control bits, wherein at least one field of the current beacon frame is parsed.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein a portion of the information elements are not parsed if one of the control bits indicates that there is no change in the information elements.
