Abstract

Various systems, methods and materials are disclosed that enable efficient delivery of an agent into an adhesively adhered article, in which the agent elicits a desired outcome, on demand. This strategy, though general in scope, is also more specifically described with regard to enabling painless or atraumatic removal of products adhering to mammalian tissues such as skin and hair by suitably exploiting the ingress of an appropriate agent or like fluid. Other techniques and articles that aid in the handling or removal of such adhesive products are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A multitopographic adhesive assembly adapted for selective debonding from a substrate upon contact with a fluid debonding agent, the adhesive assembly comprising:

a facestock;

a layer of a first adhesive disposed adjacent to the facestock;

a layer of a second adhesive defining an underside adherable to a substrate,

wherein the first adhesive is insoluble in the fluid debonding agent, and the second adhesive is highly soluble or swellable in the fluid debonding agent; and

wherein the layer of the second adhesive defines a plurality of flow channels.

2. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the layer of the first adhesive and the layer of the second adhesive are in contact with one another.

3. The multitopographic adhesive of claim 1 wherein the layer of the first adhesive is disposed between the facestock and the layer of the second adhesive.

4. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a release liner disposed along and in contact with the underside of the layer of the second adhesive.

5. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the second adhesive is less than 30% crosslinked.

6. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 5 wherein the second adhesive is less than 20% crosslinked.

7. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 6 wherein the second adhesive is less than 10% crosslinked.

8. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 7 wherein the second adhesive is less than 1% crosslinked.

9. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 hour.

10. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 9 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 10 minutes.

11. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 10 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 minute.

12. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 11 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent immediately or substantially so.

13. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive is selected from the group consisting of an acrylic adhesive, a rubber adhesive, a hydrocolloid adhesive, and combinations thereof.

14. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the second adhesive is selected from the group consisting of a silicone adhesive, a silicone gel adhesive, a silicone hybrid adhesive, a hydrogel adhesive, a water-based adhesive, and combinations thereof.

15. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone adhesive.

16. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone gel adhesive.

17. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrogel adhesive.

18. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrocolloid adhesive.

19. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 18 defining at least one edge region, wherein the plurality of flow channels defined by the layer of the second adhesive are accessible along the at least one edge region.

20. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 1 wherein the first adhesive exhibits a first solubility parameter and the second adhesive exhibits a second solubility parameter, wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.0 MPa^1/2.

21. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 20 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.5 MPa^1/2.

22. The multitopographic adhesive assembly of claim 21 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 2.0 MPa^1/2.

23. A system for selectively debonding from a substrate, the system comprising:

a multitopographic adhesive assembly including

a facestock;

a layer of a first adhesive disposed adjacent to the facestock; and

a layer of a second adhesive defining an underside for contacting the substrate; and

a fluid debonding agent;

wherein the first adhesive is insoluble in the fluid debonding agent, and the second adhesive is highly soluble or swellable in the fluid debonding agent.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the layer of the first adhesive and the layer of the second adhesive are in contact with one another.

25. The system of claim 23 wherein the layer of the first adhesive is disposed between the facestock and the layer of the second adhesive.

26. The system of claim 23 further comprising:

a release liner disposed along and in contact with the underside of the layer of the second adhesive.

27. The system of claim 23 wherein the second adhesive is less than 30% crosslinked.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the second adhesive is less than 20% crosslinked.

29. The system of claim 28 wherein the second adhesive is less than 10% crosslinked.

30. The system of claim 29 wherein the second adhesive is less than 1% crosslinked.

31. The system of claim 23 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 hour.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 10 minutes.

33. The system of claim 32 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 minute.

34. The system of claim 33 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent immediately or substantially so.

35. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive is selected from the group consisting of an acrylic adhesive, a rubber adhesive, a hydrocolloid adhesive, and combinations thereof.

36. The system of claim 23 wherein the second adhesive is selected from the group consisting of a silicone adhesive, a silicone gel adhesive, a hydrogel adhesive, a water-based adhesive, and combinations thereof.

37. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone adhesive.

38. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone gel adhesive.

39. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrogel adhesive.

40. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is hydrocolloid adhesive.

41. The system of claim 23 wherein the layer of the second adhesive defines a plurality of flow channels.

42. The system of claim 41 defining at least one edge region, wherein the plurality of flow channels defined in the layer of the second adhesive are accessible along the at least one edge region.

43. The system of claim 23 wherein the first adhesive exhibits a first solubility parameter and the second adhesive exhibits a second solubility parameter, wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.0 MPa^1/2.

44. The system of claim 43 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.5 MPa^1/2.

45. The system of claim 44 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 2.0 MPa^1/2.

46. A method for selectively debonding an adhesive assembly adhered to a substrate by use of a fluid agent, the method comprising:

providing a multitopographic adhesive assembly adhered to a substrate, the multitopographic adhesive assembly including a facestock, a layer of a first adhesive disposed adjacent to the facestock, and a layer of a second adhesive defining an underside which is in contact with the substrate, wherein the first adhesive is insoluble in the fluid agent, and the second adhesive is highly soluble or swellable in the fluid agent;

administering an effective amount of the fluid agent to the layer of the second adhesive, whereby debonding occurs between the second adhesive and the substrate thereby debonding the adhesive assembly from the substrate.

47. The method of claim 46 wherein the fluid agent is administered along at least a portion of an edge of the layer of the second adhesive.

48. The method of claim 46 wherein the second adhesive is less than 30% crosslinked.

49. The method of claim 48 wherein the second adhesive is less than 20% crosslinked.

50. The method of claim 49 wherein the second adhesive is less than 10% crosslinked.

51. The method of claim 50 wherein the second adhesive is less than 1% crosslinked.

52. The method of claim 46 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 hour.

53. The method of claim 52 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 10 minutes.

54. The method of claim 53 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 minute.

55. The method of claim 54 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent immediately or substantially so.

56. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive is selected from the group consisting of an acrylic adhesive, a rubber adhesive, a hydrocolloid adhesive, and combinations thereof.

57. The method of claim 46 wherein the second adhesive is selected from the group consisting of a silicone adhesive, a silicone gel adhesive, a silicone hybrid adhesive, a hydrogel adhesive, a water-based adhesive, and combinations thereof.

58. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone adhesive.

59. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone gel adhesive.

60. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrogel adhesive.

61. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is hydrocolloid adhesive.

62. The method of claim 46 wherein the layer of the second adhesive defines a plurality of flow channels.

63. The method of claim 62 defining at least one edge region, wherein the plurality of flow channels defined in the layer of the second adhesive are accessible along the at least one edge region.

64. The method of claim 46 wherein the first adhesive exhibits a first solubility parameter and the second adhesive exhibits a second solubility parameter, wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.0 MPa^1/2.

65. The method of claim 64 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.5 MPa^1/2.

66. The method of claim 65 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 2.0 MPa^1/2.

67. A method for bonding an adhesive assembly to a substrate and subsequently selectively debonding the adhesive assembly from the substrate, the method comprising:

providing a multitopographic adhesive assembly including a facestock, a layer of a first adhesive disposed adjacent to the facestock, a layer of a second adhesive defining an underside, and a release liner contacting the underside of the second adhesive layer;

removing the release liner to thereby expose the underside of the layer of the second adhesive;

contacting the underside of the layer of the second adhesive to the substrate to thereby bond the multitopographic adhesive assembly to the substrate;

providing a fluid debonding agent, wherein the first adhesive is insoluble in the fluid debonding agent and the second adhesive is highly soluble or swellable in the fluid debonding agent;

administering an effective amount of the fluid debonding agent to the layer of the second adhesive whereby debonding occurs between the second adhesive and the substrate thereby debonding the multitopographic adhesive assembly from the substrate.

68. The method of claim 67 wherein the fluid debonding agent is administered along at least a portion of an edge of the layer of the second adhesive.

69. The method of claim 67 wherein the second adhesive is less than 30% crosslinked.

70. The method of claim 69 wherein the second adhesive is less than 20% crosslinked.

71. The method of claim 70 wherein the second adhesive is less than 10% crosslinked.

72. The method of claim 71 wherein the second adhesive is less than 1% crosslinked.

73. The method of claim 67 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 hour.

74. The method of claim 73 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 10 minutes.

75. The method of claim 74 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent in less than 1 minute.

76. The method of claim 75 wherein the second adhesive can dissolve into a single-phase solution of the fluid debonding agent immediately or substantially so.

77. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive is selected from the group consisting of an acrylic adhesive, a rubber adhesive, a hydrocolloid adhesive, and combinations thereof.

78. The method of claim 67 wherein the second adhesive is selected from the group consisting of a silicone adhesive, a silicone gel adhesive, a silicone hybrid adhesive, a hydrogel adhesive, a water-based adhesive, and combinations thereof.

79. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone adhesive.

80. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a silicone gel adhesive.

81. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive is an acrylic adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrogel adhesive.

82. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive is a rubber adhesive and the second adhesive is a hydrocolloid adhesive.

83. The method of claim 67 wherein the layer of the second adhesive defines a plurality of flow channels.

84. The method of claim 83 defining at least one edge region, wherein the plurality of flow channels defined in the layer of the second adhesive are accessible along the at least one edge region.

85. The method of claim 67 wherein the first adhesive exhibits a first solubility parameter and the second adhesive exhibits a second solubility parameter, wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.0 MPa^1/2.

86. The method of claim 85 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 1.5 MPa^1/2.

87. The method of claim 86 wherein the difference between the first solubility parameter and the second solubility parameter is at least 2.0 MPa^1/2.
