Abstract

A method is provided in example embodiments that include receiving a radio signal stream and segmenting the radio signal stream into segments. The segments may be packetized and transported in packets over a pseudowire in a packet-switched network. The radio signal stream can be reconstructed from the segments. In more particular embodiments, the pseudowire may be a multi-protocol label switching pseudowire or a layer 2 tunneling protocol pseudowire, for example. In yet other specific example embodiments, the radio signal stream may be received using a common public radio interface or a femtocell application programming interface.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a first radio signal stream;

segmenting the first radio signal stream into first segments;

integrating, into one of the first segments of the first radio signal stream, packet loss recovery data;

prepending a control word to the one of the first segments of the first radio signal stream;

encapsulating the one of the first segments of the first radio signal stream with a network header to produce a packet from the one of the first segments of the first radio signal stream, the packet loss recovery data, the control word, and the network header; and

transporting the packet over a first pseudowire in a packet-switched network.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pseudowire is a multi-protocol label switching pseudowire.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first pseudowire is a layer 2 tunneling protocol pseudowire.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first radio signal stream is received using a common public radio interface.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first radio signal stream is received using a femtocell application programming interface.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the one of the first segments includes timing recovery data, and the control word identifies an order in which the first segments can be reassembled.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

parsing the one of the first segments into a predetermined size, wherein the control word identifies an order in which the first segments can be reassembled into a contiguous stream.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving second segments in packets through a packet-switched network interface over a second pseudowire in the packet-switched network;

reconstructing a second radio signal stream from the second segments; and

transporting the second radio signal stream as a contiguous stream through a stream interface, wherein the first radio signal stream is received through the stream interface.

8. Logic encoded in one or more non-transitory media that includes code for execution and, when executed by one or more processors, is operable to perform operations comprising:

receiving a radio signal stream;

segmenting the radio signal stream into segments;

integrating, into one of the segments of the radio signal stream, packet loss recovery data;

prepending a control word to the one of the segments of the radio signal stream;

encapsulating the one of the segments of the radio signal stream with a network header to produce a packet from the one of the segments of the radio signal stream, the packet loss recovery data, the control word, and the network header; and

transporting the packet over a pseudowire in a packet-switched network.

9. The encoded logic of claim 8, wherein the pseudowire is a multi-protocol label switching pseudowire.

10. The encoded logic of claim 8, wherein the pseudowire is a layer 2 tunneling protocol pseudowire.

11. The encoded logic of claim 8, wherein the radio signal stream is received using a common public radio interface.

12. The encoded logic of claim 8, wherein the radio signal stream is received using a femtocell application programming interface.

13. The encoded logic of claim 8, wherein the one of the segments includes timing recovery data, and the control word identifies an order in which the segments can be reassembled.

14. The encoded logic of claim 8, the operations further comprising:

parsing the one of the segments into a predetermined size, wherein the control word identifies an order in which the segments can be reassembled into a contiguous stream.

15. An apparatus, comprising:

one or more processors operable to execute instructions such that the apparatus is configured to

receive a radio signal stream through a stream interface;

segment the radio signal stream into segments;

integrate, into one of the segments of the radio signal stream, packet loss recovery data;

prepend a control word to the one of the segments of the radio signal stream;

encapsulate the one of the segments of the radio signal stream with a network header to produce a packet from the one of the segments of the radio signal stream, the packet loss recovery data, the control word, and the network header; and

transport the packet through a packet-switched network interface over a pseudowire in a packet-switched network.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the pseudowire is a multi-protocol label switching pseudowire.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the pseudowire is a layer 2 tunneling protocol pseudowire.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the radio signal stream is received using a common public radio interface.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the radio signal stream is received using a femtocell application programming interface.

20. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the apparatus is further configured to parse the one of the segments into a predetermined size, and the control word identifies an order in which the segments can be reassembled into a contiguous stream.
