1. A method in a wireless network, the method comprising:

  • a) transmitting, by the network, downlink packets to a mobile device using a periodic semi-persistent downlink transmission resource that is aligned with discontinuous reception (DRX) awake periods defined for the mobile device by the network during establishment of DRX mode, wherein the semi-persistent downlink transmission resource is scheduled using semi-persistent scheduling;

    b) transmitting, by the network, an additional downlink packet or sub-packet to the mobile device, wherein transmitting the additional downlink packet or sub-packet comprises;

    i) allocating, by the network, an additional downlink transmission resource to transmit the additional packet or sub-packet, the additional resource being allocated to occur within one of the awake periods defined for the mobile device, wherein the additional transmission resource is scheduled using dynamic scheduling;

    ii) during one of the awake periods defined for the mobile device, transmitting, by the network, signaling that defines the additional downlink transmission resource to transmit the additional packet or sub-packet;

    iii) during one of the awake periods defined for the mobile device, transmitting the additional downlink packet using the additional downlink resource;

    c) de-allocating the semi-persistent downlink transmission resource.
