Abstract

In some implementations, a method implemented in an eNodeB base station (eNB) for a single carrier frequency division multiple access SC-FDMA wireless system includes receiving an uplink control channel signal on an assigned scheduling request resource. A user ID is decoded from the received uplink control channel signal. A message assigning a portion of a resource of the wireless system to a UE associated with the decoded user ID is transmitted.

Claims

1. A method implemented in an eNodeB (eNB) for a single carrier frequency division multiple access SC-FDMA wireless system comprising:

assigning a recurring scheduling request resource to a plurality of User Equipments (UEs);

receiving an SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal on an assigned scheduling request resource;

decoding a user ID from the received SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal; and

transmitting a message assigning a portion of a resource of the wireless system to a UE associated with the decoded user ID.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein assigning the scheduling request resource comprises generating a broadcast transmission or a common signalling message.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said assigning the scheduling request resource comprises sending a dedicated transmission to a target UE.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the user ID is related to a Cell Radio Network Temporary Identifier C-RNTI.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein assigning the scheduling request resource comprises assigning the scheduling request resource to a plurality of UEs of the wireless system.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the step of decoding comprises using a block forward error correction FEC decoder.

7. A method according to claim 1 wherein the uplink control channel signal comprises a Physical Uplink Control Channel PUCCH format 2 or format 3 signal.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein decoding the user ID uses a non-user-specific bit scrambling sequence.

9. A method according to claim 8 further comprising transmitting information relating to the non-user specific bit scrambling sequence.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the transmitted information is associated with the assigned scheduling request resource.

11. A method according to claim 1 wherein the scheduling request resource comprises a plurality of constituent resources.

12. A method according to claim 11 further comprising receiving a plurality of uplink control channel signals on the plurality of constituent resources and wherein decoding of the user ID is based upon the plurality of received uplink control channel signals.

13. A method according to claim 11 wherein decoding the user ID comprises:

decoding a first portion of the user ID from an uplink control channel signal received on one of the plurality of constituent resources; and

determining a second portion of the user ID from the location of the constituent resource upon which the uplink control channel signal was received.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the assigned scheduling request resource is within a PUCCH frequency region of an uplink system bandwidth of the wireless system.

15. A method according to claim 1 wherein the assigned scheduling request resource is within a PUSCH frequency region of an uplink system bandwidth of the wireless system.

16. A method according to claim 1 further comprising extracting a cyclic redundancy check code CRC from the received uplink control channel signal and utilising said CRC to check the integrity of the transmission.

17. A method according to claim 1 further comprising:

receiving from a UE comprising a plurality of antennas, a composite signal comprising signals from each of the antennas;

decoding a user ID from the composite signal.

18. A method according to claim 17 wherein the plurality of antennas is associated with a plurality of user IDs and the signals from each of the antennas comprises one of the plurality of user IDs.

19. A method according to claim 18 further comprising sending a signal comprising an instruction as to which of the plurality of antennas to select for an uplink transmission based on the decoded user ID.

20. A method according to claim 19 wherein:

each of the plurality of user IDs is associated with a particular antenna of the UE and the respective user IDs are encoded on respective received signals; and

associating the decoded user ID with one of the antennas of the UE.

21. A method according to claim 17 wherein:

each received signal comprises cyclic shifted reference signals with a cyclic shift associated with a respective antenna.

22. A method according to claim 1 wherein said assigned scheduling request resource is associated with a first scheduling request resource type, and said method further comprises:

assigning a further scheduling request resource to the UE where said further scheduling request resource associated with a second scheduling request resource type;

determining that a change from the first scheduling request resource type to the second scheduling request resource type for the UE is desirable; and

upon determining that a change in scheduling request resource type is desirable, transmitting a command to the UE instructing the UE to transmit scheduling requests on the further assigned scheduling request resource associated with the second scheduling request resource type.

23. A method according to claim 22 wherein the scheduling request resource is assigned to a plurality of UEs and the further assigned scheduling request resource is a dedicated resource assigned to the UE.

24. A method according to claim 22 wherein determining that a change of scheduling request resource type is desirable comprises detecting a change in activity of the UE based on at least one of:

a current data activity status or a data activity level relating to the UE;

an activity relating to one or more applications resident on the UE;

an activity relating to services or logical channels associated with the UE;

a discontinuous reception timer DRX state or sub-state;

a change in pattern relating to a DRX;

a determination of whether one or more timers controlling DRX behaviour are running or have expired;

a determination or measurement of pathloss between the eNB and the UE;

a determination or measurement of a downlink carrier to interference C/I or downlink carrier to interference-plus-noise C/N+I;

a determination or measurement of a uplink carrier to interference C/I or uplink carrier to interference-plus-noise C/N+I;

an uplink data rate for the UE;

an uplink modulation and coding scheme for the UE;

a ratio of maximum device transmit power to a current UE transmission power.

25. A method according to claim 1 wherein said assigned scheduling request resource is associated with a first scheduling request resource type, and said method further comprises:

assigning a further scheduling request resource to the UE where said further scheduling request resource associated with a second scheduling request resource type; and

receiving a further uplink control channel signal from the UE on the further assigned resource.

26. A method according to claim 1 wherein SC-FDMA is used by the eNB for receiving uplink communication signals.

27. A method according to claim 1, wherein a modulation scheme other than SC-FDMA is used by the eNB for sending downlink communication signals.

28. An eNodeB (eNB) for a single carrier frequency division multiple access SC-FDMA wireless system, comprising:

one or more processors configured to;

assign a recurring scheduling request resource to a plurality of User Equipments (UEs);

receive an SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal on an assigned scheduling request resource;

decode a user ID from the received SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal; and

transmit a message assigning a portion of a resource of the wireless system to a UE associated with the decoded user ID.

29. A wireless system comprising an eNodeB according to claim 28.

30. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein the one or more processors configured to assign the scheduling request resource comprises the one or more processors configured to generate a broadcast transmission or a common signalling message.

31. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein said assigning the scheduling request resource comprises sending a dedicated transmission to a target UE.

32. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein the user ID is related to a Cell Radio Network Temporary Identifier C-RNTI.

33. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein the one or more processors configured to assign the scheduling request resource comprises the one or more processors configured to assign the scheduling request resource to a plurality of UEs of the wireless system.

34. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein the uplink control channel signal comprises a Physical Uplink Control Channel PUCCH format 2 or format 3 signal.

35. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein decoding the user ID uses a non-user-specific bit scrambling sequence.

36. The eNodeB of claim 28, the one or more processors configured to receive a plurality of uplink control channel signals on a plurality of constituent resources and wherein decoding of the user ID is based upon the plurality of received uplink control channel signals.

37. The eNodeB of claim 28, wherein the assigned scheduling request resource is within a PUCCH frequency region or a PUSCH frequency region of an uplink system bandwidth of the wireless system.

38. The eNodeB of claim 28, the one or more processors further configured to extract a cyclic redundancy check code CRC from the received uplink control channel signal and utilising said CRC to check the integrity of the transmission.

39. The eNodeB of claim 28, the one or more processors further configured to:

receive from a UE comprising a plurality of antennas, a composite signal comprising signals from each of the antennas;

decode a user ID from the composite signal.

The eNodeB of claim 39, the one or more processors further configured to send a signal comprising an instruction as to which of the plurality of antennas to select for an uplink transmission based on the decoded user ID, wherein the plurality of antennas is associated with a plurality of user IDs and the signals from each of the antennas comprises one of the plurality of user IDs.

41. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions to cause a processor to perform operations comprising:

assigning a recurring scheduling request resource to a plurality of User Equipments (UEs);

receiving an SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal on an assigned scheduling request resource;

decoding a user ID from the received SC-FDMA uplink control channel signal; and

transmitting a message assigning a portion of a resource of a wireless system to a UE associated with the decoded user ID.

42. A method implemented in an eNodeB for a wireless telecommunications system comprising:

assigning a scheduling request resource comprising a plurality of subcarriers to a user equipment UE;

receiving an uplink control channel signal on the plurality of subcarriers of the assigned resource;

despreading the received uplink control channel signal to form a first plurality of modulation symbol estimates;

decoding a user ID from the received uplink control channel signal using the first plurality of modulation symbol estimates; and

transmitting a message assigning a portion of uplink resources to the UE associated with the decoded user ID.
