1. A method for displaying a prioritized item on a persistent display in response to a low-power determination, the method comprising:

  • a processing unit of a programmable personal digital assistant device populating a prioritized data list comprising a plurality of screen image instances listed in an order prioritized as a function of inputs from a user list of items, clock data associated with the user list of items, and calendar data associated with the user list of items;

    the processing unit querying a power subsystem of the personal digital assistant device to determine a level of battery power currently available for operating processes of the personal digital assistant device;

    the processing unit determining a number of screen display changes effectible on a persistent display device in communication with the personal digital assistant device by the processing unit at the determined level of available battery power;

    the processing unit comparing the determined number of screen display changes effectible on the persistent display device by the processing unit at the determined level of available battery power to a specified minimum threshold number of images; and

    in response to a determination that the determined number of screen display changes effectible on the persistent display device at the determined level of available battery power is not more than the specified minimum threshold number of images;

    the processing unit powering down a subsystem of the personal digital assistant device to conserve battery power, and automatically causing a highest prioritized image of the populated prioritized data list to be displayed on the persistent display device; and

    wherein the persistent display device is a non-volatile electronic ink display that, after a loss of power to the persistent display device, relies on reflected light to continue to persistently display the highest prioritized image or a currently displayed image that is displayed on the persistent display device.
