Abstract

An arrangement permitting a user for example in a internet point or using a different profile in the same machine can connect to a web server to download and install local client software such as a java application or a browser plug-in the first time he accesses to this service from that browser in order to customize his environment. Once authenticated, he can choose the personalization to be performed in whatever application installed and eligible to be user customizable. For example he can replicate in the system his browser settings (favorites, cookies, forms etc) or word templates as a clone of environment setting of his personal machine. The customization can depend on pre-defined profiles to allow the user customization of a subset of settings, for example only browser settings. Models of different operating environments are defined and called upon to enable interactions with different client devices.

Claims

1. A method of managing settings for a user a client device connected to a data network, the method comprising:

receiving information pertaining to an operating environment running on a client device being used by the user;

determining details of the operating environment running on the client device;

selecting an environment model from a set of stored environmental models established for the user as a function of the operating environment running on the client device, each environmental model defining a set of personalisable applications typically available in an operating environment;

retrieving user specified setting data from the data network, wherein the user specified setting data is specific to a respective personalisable application;

transforming the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the selected environment model, wherein the selected environment model defines the set of personalisable applications for the operating environment on the client device; and

adjusting settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

downloading a personalisation application from the data network; and

executing the personalisation application at the client device, wherein the personalisation application implements the determining, selecting, retrieving, transforming, and adjusting steps.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the personalisation application comprises platform independent code.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected environment model corresponds to an operating system running on the client device.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the selected environment model to determine details of an application software environment at the client device, and

selecting an application model from a set of stored application models established for the user as a function of the application software environment on the client device, each application model defining an application of the set of applications on the client device for which a user of the client device has requested personalisation, wherein transforming the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the environment model is carried out so that the user specified setting data conforms to the application software environment on the client device, and wherein adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the environment model is carried out with reference to the application software environment on the client device.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

detecting a case where a component of the transformed software setting is incompatible with the application software environment at the client device.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

retrieving an alternative application model.

The method of claim 7, wherein there is a defined hierarchy of application models and wherein retrieving the alternative application model from the set of stored application models further comprises successively retrieving application models from the set of stored application models according to the hierarchy of application models until a satisfactory application model is found.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing original settings present at the client device prior to adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

comparing the transformed user specified setting data with the original settings of the client device to detect any changes implemented during a session.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

restoring the original settings when the user logs off the client device.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

uploading the user specified setting data from the client device via the data network.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the operating environment corresponds to an operating system running on the client device.

13. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory comprises instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to;

receive information pertaining to an operating environment running on a client device being used by a user;

determine details of the operating environment running on the client device;

select an environment model from a set of stored environmental models established for the user as a function of the operating environment running on the client device, each environmental model defining a set of personalisable applications typically available in an operating environment;

retrieve user specified setting data from the data network, wherein the user specified setting data is specific to a respective personalisable application;

transform the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the selected environment model, wherein the selected environment model defines the set of personalisable applications for the operating environment on the client device; and

adjust settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

download a personalisation application from the data network; and

execute the personalisation application at the client device, wherein the personalisation application implements the determining, selecting, retrieving, transforming, and adjusting steps, wherein the personalisation application comprises platform independent code.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

use the selected environment model to determine details of an application software environment at the client device;

select an application model from a set of stored application models established for the user as a function of the application software environment on the client device, each application model defining at least one of the one or more applications of the set of applications on the client device for which a user of the client device requested personalisation, wherein transforming the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the environment model is carried out so that the user specified setting data conforms to the application software environment on the client device, and wherein adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the environment model is carried out with reference to the application software environment on the client device;

detect a case where a component of the transformed software setting is incompatible with the application software environment at the client device; and

retrieve an alternative application model.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

store original settings present at the client device prior to adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model;

compare the transformed user specified setting data with the original settings of the client device to detect any changes implemented during a session; and

restore the original settings when the user logs off the client device.

17. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having a computer readable program recorded thereon, wherein the computer readable program, when executed on a computing device, causes the computing device to:

receive information pertaining to an operating environment running on a client device being used by a user;

determine details of the operating environment running on the client device;

select an environment model from a set of stored environmental models established for the user as a function of the operating environment running on the client device each environmental model defining a set of personalisable applications typically available in an operating environment;

retrieve user specified setting data from the data network, wherein the user specified setting data is specific to a respective personalisable application;

transform the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the selected environment model, wherein the selected environment model defines the set of personalisable applications for the operating environment on the client device; and

adjust settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model.

18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computing device to:

download a personalisation application from the data network; and

execute the personalisation application at the client device, wherein the personalisation application implements the determining, selecting, retrieving, transforming, and adjusting steps, wherein the personalisation application comprises platform independent code.

19. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computing device to:

use the selected environment model to determine details of an application software environment at the client device;

select arm application model from a set of stored application models established for the user as a function of the application software environment on the client device, each application model defining an application of the set of applications on the client device for which a user of the client device has requested personalisation, wherein transforming the user specified setting data so as to conform to the operating environment on the client device with reference to the environment model is carried out so that the user specified setting data conforms to the application software environment on the client device, and wherein adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the environment model is carried out with reference to the application software environment on the client device;

detect a case where a component of the transformed software setting is incompatible with the application software environment at the client device; and

retrieve an alternative application model.

20. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer readable program further causes the computing device to:

store original settings present at the client device prior to adjusting the settings in the client device so as to incorporate the transformed user specified setting data for the set of personalisable applications with reference to the selected environment model;

compare the transformed user specified setting data with the original settings of the client device to detect any changes implemented during a session; and

restore the original settings when the user logs off the client device.
